ParticipantI notice many people who like adventure games in the style of sierra or lucasarts generally don’t like action based or roleplaying games. Why is that?
I love adventure games like space quest, king’s quest, police quest, monkey island and almost every other one out there.
I love roleplaying games like final fantasy, fallout, chrono trigger, ultima and etc
I like action based games like quake 3, duke nukem, half-life, doom and practically all the rest in this genre.
I like simultation games like the sims, simcity, rollercoaster tycoon because they are unique and very fun.
Am I the only one like this? From all the many places I’ve been on the internet and the people I’ve met in real life, most people choose a style and stick with it. Are there any people on this site who agree with my outlook on games? An all around enjoyment of games in general? Of course, don’t get me wrong…I still think Sierra was the god back during the adventure game era. Nothing beats sitting down and tearing out your hair trying to figure out just what to say to make that Police officer authorize you to dive in PQ2. 😀

Same here, I play any genre as long as the game is good. When you restrict yourself to one genre of games, you miss out on a lot of really good games.

Although I prefer graphic adventures above all else, I must recognize sometimes I get tired. Then I play games from other genres, like SimCity 4 or Unreal Tournament. Usually I don’t enjoy FPS, but they are funny if you play them with some friends.
I also like GTA, Baldur’s Gate.. and lately i’ve been playing Inspector Parker, a great puzzle game made by Oberon Media, a company who I believe belongs to Jane Jensen. -

Participant(re: The Hybrid Gamer) Good..so I’m not the only one who likes more than one type of game. I just don’t like it when some people call you a shallow person when you play Doom or Unreal, or when “new generation” gamers think your wierd for playing old sierra adventures. If a game is fun and you like it thats all that matters right?
Heres an example of some new games I’ll be getting some time in the near future when I get my new computer (and some money):
Sims 2 (already bought it now)
Leisure Suit Larry: MCL (despite the critics I want to judge it for myself)
Doom 3
Half-life 2
Need for Speed Underground
Max payne
Myst 4
Roller Coaster Tycoon 3So you see how my palette varies.

Participant(re: The Hybrid Gamer) Yea I have a huge problem with adventure gamers calling people “shallow” for playing action games. I’ve noticed this attitude prevalent among most online adventure game communities and websites that I’ve come across. They’ll say things like “if you’re a pimply-faced adolescent looking for info on Grand Theft Auto Version 26, you’re in the wrong place.” The really great part is that they almost always name games that are actually much better than any adventure game has been in at least half a decade (GTA, Mario, etc.).
The first time I saw something like this was way back in 1996 or so, a few months before Super Mario 64 came out. It was in PC Gamer’s adventure column. The guy writes “…the world does not need another bloody Super Mario game!” Super Mario 64, 8 years later, remains one of the top 5-10 games ever made (personally I’d say 1-3).
The attitude seems to be something fairly unique to adventure gamers – I find that people who have a “favorite genre” other than adventure often do play some of the best games in other genres.

Participant(re: The Hybrid Gamer) Is there an online game like Legend of Zelda 64: Ocarina of Time?
I thought that would be great. I would pay monthly up to $39.95 if the game was good enough!!
MMORPG with the tight physics and simple graphics of Zelda 64, or the cell-based graphics of the New Zelda for GameCube,… It can’t be too random like EverQuest… more like Hero’s Quest (QFG) where you have classes of fighters, maybe a custom image for your face. Lots of adventures (missions) given to you by the NPC’s that wander the village in 3-D with horses,…. whoa. Of course if it’s Zelda: CHICKENS are in the town. They are everywhere. No rats, but.. lots of chickens. And they are quite annoying.
I can’t find a game like that right now…

I don’t think you can judge games in different genres. I have favs for each one, but I wouldn’t say “This adventure is better than that fps game”. Just because they aren’t meant to be the same.

Participant(re: The Hybrid Gamer) Take a look at this:

Its a prime example of what I mean by people who stick to genres. I mean no offense to him, but I just had to use this proof. My name is avatar_58 on that forum, so you can read my comments.
Why would the sims 2 or any non action game be biased to a certain gender (im sure you can guess what gender he was referring to) Thats even sexist….I’m sure there are quite a few UT2k4 female players…I know for sure there are female rpg fans.

Participant(re: The Hybrid Gamer) I don’t mean to be offensive, but I’d rather agree with Scream than with you. The gender question has always been a hot topic in the game industry and it’s been a topic for Sierra On-Line, as well. King’s Quest IV, e.g., introducing a female protagonist, was a daring attempt to attract a greater female audience. Interestingly, the Leisure Suit Larry series was known to have an above average appeal to women.
My point is, women and men are different. This isn’t sexism, it’s just the plain truth. Anyway, life would be very boring if it weren’t so! 😉
I understand that sexism does exist and that a lot of differences between women and men are socially induced… No matter what, these differences exist and marketing people have to deal, among other things, with gender breakdowns of audiences. Maybe we’re talking clichés here, but these clichés do influence the market, and society. There’s no reason not to talk about it.
Don’t get me wrong, though… I’m with you all the way concerning cross-genre open-mindedness. You made me reflect on my own prejudices – thank you very much for that! 🙂
Concerning Doom 3 – I’ve lost interest in the game market during the last 8 years or so. Everything I see my mates play looks like little more than slightly improved versions of very old concepts… I write this to clarify that I’m not a “gaming insider” at all, so my opinion on Doom 3 is my opinion in relation to the old Doom games and some of the later FPS I’ve seen around like Battlefield.
I’ve played Doom 3 at a friend’s house, with speakers turned up, lights turned out and doors closed… And though I found the gothic / horror style violence displayed a little too sick for my own personal taste at times (I’m not complaining, Doom is notorious for its gory shock effects, after all, so that’s what you’d expect), I found the overall experience VERY exciting and living up to my expectations. One very cool gimmick is the PDA you’re carrying around, collecting files from former coworkers. These contain e-mails and voice files providing you with bits and peaces of the dark story as well as hints and combination numbers for keypad-locked doors. One of these combinations you even have to pick up from an internet page whose URL you find in a spam e-mail! (All in game, so you won’t be spammed personally! 😉
I thought this was a marvellous idea because it really gets you involved; it’s even a little like an adventure game puzzle. I think utilizing the internet for this is also a neat idea. I don’t know if it’s been done but I do find this quite innovative (about people who said Doom 3 isn’t innovative at all.) So is the “torch thing”. You have to use a torch to spy in dark corners a LOT. And of course, when you spot something, you have to switch back to your shotgun quick! It seems strange that 3rd millenium space suits don’t have helmet lamps, but the idea really makes for an exciting experience! I found the graphics engine very compalling, too. Maybe someone’s done it before, but I haven’t ever seen hot air flicker in a game before.
That said, I think if you haven’t devoured every fps since Half-Life and feel somewhat nostalgic about Doom, this is definitely a game for you to play! I can’t see why anyone found this atmospherically ingenious game disappointing… Too high expecations, I suppose, like others have stated in that 3D-Realms Forum.

Participant(re: The Hybrid Gamer) I’ll probably get Doom 3 eventually, some time after I get my new pc (which is so soon I can scream…) It sounds like a good game to me despite criticism.
On the topic of being open minded towards different genres, how many people are going to get Larry MCL? I am…I don’t mind the new stlye, it might even help the series. It may not be an Al Lowe masterpiece, but it looks funny!

Please don’t take offense, but frankly, if THAT’s your perception of Doom 3 (the most derivative, unoriginal FPS ever?), then you really have been away from gaming for awhile.

Participant(re: The Hybrid Gamer) Johann de Waal, I haven’t taken offense and you’re right, I’ve been away from gaming for awhile indeed. I hope you do neither take offense when I say that I find your statement of opinion a little void of substantiation. So what made you think Doom 3 was so “derivative” and “unoriginal”?
To give just one example, I thought the

internet ad whose URL can be found in a spam e-mail that comes with a PDA file was a great idea and to me it shows some dedication on id Software’s behalf. I really like the way it’s done; to me it’s the closest thing to Infocom’s feelies I’ve seen in a long time. The combination opens a cabinet containing some equipment that’s locked with a keypad combination – the one you can find on the martianbuddy.com homepage. In which FPS have you come across something like that lately?
