I was just going through my Adventure Games collection, and spent some time looking over The Roberta Williams Anthology collection. It felt important to state how grateful I am that this collection was created, and that I purchased it years ago when I first saw it. At the time, I hoped that Roberta would never stop making adventure games, and I truly miss seeing new products with her name on them.
That said, at least there is this wonderful anthology collection of her finest games, including King’s Quests 1 thru 7, both Laura Bow mysteries, Mixed Up Mother Goose, and even some of her early games like Mystery House and The Wizard and the Princess. I’m grateful that even though there are no longer any new adventures coming out from Roberta, it is a joy to turn to this collection for some fond memories. And it was very fitting that this tribute to Roberta was made in the first place. Bravo!

Usually, I am against these sorts of things… a company making more and more collections for the sake of making collections… take for example the most ridiculous thing I ever heard… after releasing all 7 seasons of ST:TNG on DVD (charging much more $ than any other TV series on DVD does), Paramount is now going to release “The Captain Picard Collection” of episodes on DVD. That’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard.
Anyway, I don’t feel this way in Sierra’s case, and you’re right – the tribute to Roberta is fitting. I sure wish I had got a copy of it when it was released!

The Kings’s Quest Collection/Roberta Williams Anthology is always being sold on eBay, so I’m sure you can still get it. It’s definitely worth every penny.

Yeah, but it’s rarer to find a new copy, which is what I’d be looking for as a collector, and then the prices get high.

Wow, it is hard to believe that I have both collections and that they are in demand.  Kings Quest Collection was a Christmas gift from my husband and I played each episode, then waited until KQ5 came out, then every other year the next episode.  Then, when Anthology came out, it became a part of my collection of adventure games also.  There never has been nor never will be another game writer like Roberta.  They only problem I have with the older games is that unless you play them straight through (at least on my high speed computer) you cannot play them at all. Thanks again for all your wonderful work.

(re: Roberta Williams Anthology) I’ve had a copy of the Roberta Williams Anthology for years, but hadn’t gotten around to reinstalling it since getting my new computer; I finally decided to do so, and couldn’t get past the computer test part. Every time it tried to test the CD drive, it would crash with an “integer division by 0” error.

Anyway, the reason I bring this up is to mention that I went to the Sierra site to try to find some tech support info on it, and–there’s absolutely nothing about the anthology there. Nada. It doesn’t even appear in the KnowledgeBase dropdown (although other collections, and other products at least as old, do). For some reason VU just doesn’t seem to be acknowledging that the Anthology ever existed…

Oh, well. Anyway, I eventually did get it installed by just skipping the CD test, and played the first few King’s Quests for the first time. (I’m on KQ3 now.) Yeah, I admit, I didn’t have them when they first came out, and I’d never played them before. Though I did play through the first few Hi-Res Adventures as a kid, so I certainly didn’t have an entirely Sierra-free childhood. 😉

(re: Roberta Williams Anthology) Hi, Alun

You don’t say what OS you’re working on. I’m assuming XP. Try copying the files to your hard drive instead of going through the install. As for the VU site not giving any info on the RWA, you need to dig alittle bit further. Try this: http://community.vugames.com/WebX?13@55.2yNmdJ5POpW.714334@.ef93db8  and start a new thread. There’s people there to help you. 🙂 Hope this helps!

I just purchased the collection off of eBay and can’t get the first disk to install- even in MS-DOS! I am only running windows 98. I have to say that I just found this website and it is like coming to a reunion! I was raised on this series. I played the original on PCJr. I remember staying home “sick” from school just to be able to play all day. It is so great that there are others who love it as much!

(re: Roberta Williams Anthology) Julie – Er… thanks for trying to help, I suppose, but I guess you didn’t read the last paragraph of my post. As I said, despite my initial difficulty, I did eventually manage to get the program installed.

About the VU site not giving any info on the RWA, I was referring to the fact that it doesn’t appear on the dropdowns and doesn’t seem to be acknowledged in any official way by VU. I’m well aware that that this doesn’t prevent people from seeking advice from fellow fans, and in fact had been considering starting a thread about it on the very page you link to (but didn’t do so because I ended up figuring out how to solve the problem myself).

Heidistucky, though, have you tried following Julie’s advice? It doesn’t really help me, since I already managed to get the installation to work, but maybe her advice will work for you…

(re: Roberta Williams Anthology) Thanks guys, for the great advice. Unfortunatly, I believe this to be an actual factory error. Both disk one and disk two are the same. But because of the wonderful fans of this game, I have been sent KQ1-5 and now can play to my heart’s content! I guess I’ll just put my antholgy on the shelf…
