ParticipantThis is something I noticed after playing the Tierra remakes. The first three games in the series had several “random encounters” – characters appearing randomly on the screen, mostly stealing something from the inventory (Dwarf on KQ 1 & 2, Bandits on KQ 3), killing the player (Wizard in KQ 2) or helping (Fairies on KQ 1 & 2). This stopped around KQ4, I think, when encounters became completely location-based. Though I think removing these encounters was a smart move (avoiding random monsters was always more of a pain than a challenge*), I wonder how this concept evolved? Is it some sort of legacy left from the days of text adventures?
* Of course, random encounters worked just fine with the “Quest for Glory” series, but there it made sense…

Participant(re: Random Encounters on KQ games) Have you played the sierra vga remake of King’s Quest 1? I played it before even seeing the original so I wasn’t too scared off running into random creatures. It seems in that version the ‘random’ creatures only appear in certain dark forested areas. You are pretty safe if you just stay away from there. I learned that the hard way my first time….walked right on into the forest and was captured by the witch.

i’m not sure about this, but i *think* the tierra remake of KQ1 is true to the original… and in the original, certain characters only “randomly” show up on certain screens.
my mom used to think it was really funny, how that wolf music made me jump…

Well in a way the random encounters becme more important to the story (minstral, pan, cupid, the whale and the unicorn) to further the plot. There were also oposition (sharks and the ogar and the cave monster) that would kill you and they randomly apeared the ogar not as much as the others. there’s a few more example of random encounters. I didn’t make the game but i think it evolved into more of a caution and story driver than an hinderence.

These may sound like odd question, but while we’re on the subject of encounters whats happens if the Zombies get you without the broach. Also same question about the mummy, and is it posible to so far that you can even get into the kript without the broach? Just somthing I’ve always wondered about. Also is it me or did the miser ghost look like Mr. Howall from from Giligan’s Island.

I loved KQ4. If you were in the middle of the screen when the encounter appeared basically you were screwed becasue then it was harder to move to another screen really fast, so it’s good to stay close to the edge of the screen so you can leave really quick if a monster appears. I don’t think it’s possible to not have the brooch in KQ4, night won’t come without it. I sit possible for night to come without pickin gup the brooch? I think it’d be fun to see Rosella get killed by a zombie.

I think the random encounters were phased out because times were changing and they no longer fit with the games. However, Tierra obviously decided it was better to keep them in their radically different version of KQ2. I enjoyed all the games anyway.

I think that it’s possible to use the Debug mode on KQ4 to give the Brooch to another character besides Ego, after it’s night time. I’ve never tried it though.
