ParticipantI have had Quest for Glory 4 on my shelf for awhile but have been holding off on playing until I played the others (I’m waiting for Tierra’s QfG2 remake to come out). I recently acquired the Collection series and ordinarily I would trade away the standalone version of the game (it’s just the CD, no manual or documentation so I don’t have any nosalgic reason to hold onto it). But before I do that, I have heard so many awful things about the bugs in that game and I wanted to make sure I wasn’t trading away a copy that was better or more playable. Am I right in assuming that the version on the Collection Series CD is better than — or at least as buggy as — the standalone version?
I haven’t bothered checking the version numbers, but can if that makes a difference.

It may be simplest to check the version #s. You probably don’t even have to run the game to check them. There’s probably a file called “version” in the root of both CDs. If they’re the same, then you have no worries. If they are different – well, I’m not sure that anyone here could tell you what the differences are in terms of the bugs. But I strongly suspect they are the same.

Emily, the good news is that most of the bugs have now been fixed. NewRisingSun has developed script level patches for QfG4 CD and several other Sierra games. These are patches that are what Sierra would have released, if they had bothered to patch these games themselves. So far he has fixed:
Conquests of the Longbow
Hoyle Book of Games 3
King’s Quest 1 SCI Remake
Leisure Suit Larry 3
Leisure Suit Larry 5
Quest for Glory 4 CD
Police Quest 2 (version 1.002.011 only)
Police Quest 3
Space Quest 1 Remake
Space Quest 4 CD Version
Space Quest 5
Space Quest 6These patches really work. I have successfully played QfG 4 on my Athlon 2000+ machine to completion. Without the patch, I could not even get down the slippery slope, even with Turbo. You can these patches at http://geocities.com/belzorash/

All I’ve ever heard is that the CD version had an extra year of development/testing/bug fixing over the initial release version which was rushed out.
Are there differences in the version numbers? I’ve got the CD version of Quest for Glory 4 from the Sierra Gamer pack buit haven’t played it yet for similar reasons – I’d be interested to know what your version numbers were.

Participant(re: QfG4 – Collection version vs. standalone) What was the original release version… floppies?
The version number on my standalone CD is 1.0. I can’t tell on the Collection Series CD without installing it, apparently (there’s no Version file in the folder). However, there is apparently a German (?) version of QfG4 on the collection series CD which is version 1.1. Too bad I don’t know German!
Collector, thanks for the link to the patches, that looks really helpful!

Participant(re: QfG4 – Collection version vs. standalone) Yes, Emily, the original release was on floppy.
The work that NewRisingSun is doing is amazing… I sorta hoped he’d do a QFG4 patch for the disk version too though.

Hmm… I’ve never heard that one! Maybe Ken has a memory about this. Seems like a whole extra year, besides the work that would have to be done for the voices, they could have fixed a lot more than they did.
As far as I can tell, the CD version of QFG4 on the collection CD is version 1.0 (Emily, as I noted before, for CD versions of games on collection CDs, the version file in the root of the CD often belongs to the CD version of the game on the collection CD – since all of the other files for the CD version of the game on the collection CD are also in the root of the CD). The German version on that same CD is a floppy version, and probably the 1.1 increment is just because of the German translation? But that’s only at a first thought, maybe someone else knows more. I don’t have any other copy of QFG4, stand alone CD or floppy. -

Participant(re: QfG4 – Collection version vs. standalone) I didn’t look at the version file in the root of the CD this time. (I can be taught!) The QfG4 folder on the CD doesn’t have a version file in it.

personally i wouldn’t wait for the VGA remake to come out; the original QfG2 is arguably the best sierra adventure game ever made; but then again, knowing AGD’s dedication, they’ll probably one up the original game. From what I heard, the conversation element in QG2VGA will be using a text parser, while the rest of the game will be point & click; thats good news because the text conversations is really what made the game world feel so alive and real.
The collection version of QG4 is the same version as the standalone as stated earlier.. just make sure when you play it (and QG1VGA/QG3) that you use dosbox to play it so you wont get the dreaded timer bugs..

Participant(re: QfG4 – Collection version vs. standalone) “I sorta hoped he’d do a QFG4 patch for the disk version too though.”
The last thing I was told was that those timer problems were limited to the CD version; the disk versions supposedly didn’t have those problems (I found that the “slope” problem didn’t occur in the disk version).
I’ve made the experience though that people would rather complain everywhere instead of just telling me what they would like to see. It’s not my job to surf the net chasing clues as to what MIGHT be in need of fixing. ๐“The German version on that same CD is a floppy version, and probably the 1.1 increment is just because of the German translation?”
There’s also an English version 1.1. When you install all of Sierra’s patches for version 1.0, you basically get the same except that the patch does not increase the version number.

Participant(re: QfG4 – Collection version vs. standalone) As far as concerning QfG4 versions-
The original release (Purple box, Floppies) at Dec. 93 was really a rush-release; they barely did beta-testing. A short while after they decided to do a CD-speech version. This was released less than a year after the floppy-version, a stand-alone QfG4 box (almost exactly like the Floppy box, only white) which included speech, and a Win 3.1 version; but moreover was a much stable game than the floppy version.
Later, QfG Anthology was released. The Anthology pack is really the QfG games themselves – patched correctly with all the patches – along with up-to-date documentation (including refrence to Windows 95, and programs like Mosle etc..) The QfG4 version on the collection is the CD version.
The reason that its version is 1.0 is because it was a newer interface than QfG-4 floppy.
QfG Collection is very similar to Anthology. The motive behindn its creation is the reviving of the QfG series with working underway for QfG-5. The additions is mainly the QfG-5 demo (and up-to-date Sierra installer), and some documentation updates.
So unless your buying the floppy version, you are not about to experience problems that were solved by Sierra. The thing that is left to do is to use that special patch by NewRisingSun.

Are the manuals in the original games good, like in SQ and many other Sierra games, or aren’t they? Do I miss out on a lot by only having the Collection?

Participant(re: QfG4 – Collection version vs. standalone) I can’t say specifically for QfG4 because my used copy didn’t come with a manual, but in general I’d say yes, the original manuals are way cooler than the ones in the collections.
For example, King’s Quest 4 had a little storybook that gave the history of Daventry and what had happened in the previous 3 games, leading up to the 4th. The copy protection for that game required you to look up a specific word on a specific page in the storybook. In the KQ collections, only a list of words (the “answers”) were provided, so you could get past the copy protection. The storybook itself and the history of Daventry are not included.
Even if much of the info is included (as it is for the KQ6 manual), the original manual itself had nicer materials, cool binding, etc.
I expect it’s the same for all of the collections. I do have the original manual for QfG1 but I have not looked closely at the Collection manual to see how they compare.

Definately so. QFG4 came with the Hero’s Magazine(I forgot the actual name, but you find a copy of it on the bookshelf in the Adventurer’s Guild and a reference is made to the copy that came with the game). Anyway it was really neat, filled with all sorts of silly articles and ads for fake hero products. I dont entirely know what happened to my copy, but I remember something like it gave subdle hints to solutions in the game, so it had a function other than just a gag. They did something simular with SQ4 and I think SQ5

ParticipantSorry for entering the discussion so late.
Well I see that some have lost their QFG magazines-manuals. Anyone who wants them, they are availiable for download from the Coles’ page as PDF. Unfortunately the manual of QfG 4 has not been uploaded (?yet).
Since I don’t remembe the exact address, just drop me a line and I will mail them to you. Also, I can send you the QfG 4 disk versiοn by εmail.
