ParticipantI just finished replaying through Quest for Glory II a couple days ago, and I was wondering is there a story behind why it says the next game will be Quest for Glory III: Shadows of Darkness?
I can see an obvious answer, that is, they already had a multi-game plot laid out and had yet to decided to add the third installment into it. I base this hypothesis on several facts. One, the QFGIII plot didn’t fit in as well with the overall story as it might have, don’t get me wrong I love the game, think it was well done, and works well into the plot, but the game feels almost as if it was interjected into the larger story line. I get this feeling from the fact that the story of Ad Avis, which begins in QFGII, was not really added to by the story of QFGIII. The second fact is that there is also much foreshadowing in this series, of games to come, and I sepcifically remember hearing mentions of Mordavia and Silmaria in QFGI VGA (granted, I do not know when the remake came out in relation to the other games but I know it was before QFGIV). The last fact is what I began with: at the end of QFGII it says QFGIII was going to be Shadows of Darkness.
However there are also things that dispute my theory. Such as how, in QFGII, Rakeesh spoke much of Tarna, and the events surrounding the demon he had vaquished. As I mentioned earlier there is much foreshadowing of games to come in this series, and I do not remember a time in which a land was seriously spoken of that our hero did not visit, at one time or another.
So once again I ask, why at the end of QFGII does it say the QFGIII will be Shadows of Darkness? I shared my theory, am I right? Am I Wrong? Does anybody know the real story behind the infamous Quest for Glory III: Shadows of Darkness?

Participant(re: QFG 3: Shadows of Darkness???) i remember reading about this at the tierra boards (sorry, can’t find the thread now) — i think you’re right, that they decided to expand the story after that teaser had already been included in QfG2.
maybe someone else (like Ken!) can give you a more interesting answer.

what ended up happening is that quest for glory 3 was supposed to be set as shadows of darkness, known to us as qg4. however, when the coles were designing shadows, they said that they realized that the hero himself was not ready for the type of battles he would face, and so they went to the wages of war in a jungle scenario to flesh out more of the story. that’s from an article that i read way back when sierra had their own little quarterly magazine that was basically an advertisement for all of their new games. hope that helps you.

When the Coles originally came up with the Quest for Glory series idea, they wanted four games, each having to do with the elements and the seasons. The first one was spring and earth. Trial by Fire was summer and fire. Shadows was autumn and air. And Dragon Fire was winter and water. However, as the first response to your question stated, the Coles realized that there needed to be a bridge for the games. They didn’t feel the hero was ready to just jump into Mordavia and rid it of the Dark One, and anything else that happened to be haunting the valley. So they created Wages of War as a bridge, but didn’t plan on it until after Trial by Fire was completed.

That’s weird, because I remember reading something about how QFG3 was going to have the plots of QFG 3 & 4 together in one game, but the Coles seperated the two when they realized how long the story was going to be.

ParticipantHere´s a note from Lori and Corey Cole´s web site: http://www.transolar.com/
Note 3:
How does a four-game series become five games?
The ending of “Trial by Fire” indicated that the next game in the series would be “Shadows of Darkness.” However, we had a two year break from the series while we were making Educational games, and we didn’t want to introduce new players to the horror genre of “Shadows of Darkness” until they had played a more traditional fantasy genre. So we added “Wages of War” to balance things out. -

ParticipantIf you have the QFG Collection, this same info is in one of the many readmes that came on the disk, perhaps in the hidden section of the main readme (alhtough I just scrolled through it and didnt see it in there) but it does refer to what has already been mentioned about the four seasons thing and the character just not being ready for what Shadows of Darkness held in store for him…
