ParticipantOk….I recently pulled out all of my old games and have been playing through them and so far I haven’t had any major problems. However, I started playing King’s Quest V the other day and I made it to the dark forest.
Now, whenever I try to get out of the forest I get killed by the stupid spiders. (I don’t need help solving the puzzle…I know how to do that.) Could this be a problem with my computer being too fast for the game?

Well since leaving the forest has nothing to do with the spiders, I guess you don’t know how to solve the puzzle!

Well, you’re doing better than I am, I can’t even get my new computer to play KQV. I’ve tried changing the settings and it still won’t work. It has something to do with the 265 pixel color graphics. I guess I could keep trying. Have you gotten rid of the witch and got the heart and emeralds? Have you met the elves?

The Windows version of King’s Quest V checks your screen resolution/color depth before it starts. If it does not find 640 x 480 resolution , 256 colors it will quit the game before it even starts. On Windows XP “Compatibility Mode” will let you set older games to run at this resolution/colors, but KQ5 checks before Compatibility Mode can change it.
To get around this problem, you will need to set your resolution down before you launch the game. This can be done in the advanced settings of your display settings dialog. A more convenient way to do this is to make a batch file to replace the Windows shortcut for the game. To do this:
1) Right click on the KQ5 shortcut, choose “Properties” and copy what is in the “Target” box
2) Open Notepad, paste what you copied into it and save it with a “.bat” extension, such as KQ5.bat
3) Right click on this bat file and go to the compatibility tab to set the bat file for 640 x 480 and 256 colors.
When you double click on this bat file, Compatibility Mode will change your resolution and launch the game. When the game starts, it will already be 640x480x256 and will then run.

Hey everyone, I figured out how to fix the color pixels on my computer, and I’ve got it set to 256 colors and have been happily playing kqV. I played the game twice and finished it. I didn’t have any trouble with the spiders. Does anyone need any help figuring out how to get rid of the witch?

Hello all. I’m playing KQV and am in the Dark Forest. I banished the witch away into the bottle, however when I tried to go into her house, I think the copy protection police got me. It said I had to unlock the door using some weird codes (which I assume was the manual). When I was unable to do it, it just kept telling me the door is locked and doesn’t give me the opportunity to open the door using the manual. Do I have to start over at this point, even if I now have the manual now?
Thanks – I miss Sierra!

that’s weird — I only ever encountered the codes when I tried to get in the old guy’s boat (later in the game). I don’t remember having them at the witch’s house but I could be wrong.
I suspect you need to backtrack to a saved game.

Participant(re: Problems with KQ V —-> Dark Forest) I have the oldest floppy copy I’ve ever seen (it’s like in the old Sierra style of discs, and disk one is a 5.25 inch floppy).
The copy protection in this version is in four locations (if I recall), and I think the witch’s house in one of them.
This’s is also why I was happy to buy it on CD!

I recall being eaten by the venus flytrap things, and a spider web-slinging onto Graham’s head once. I think that I wasn’t ready to go into the forest. Or I got around it, by using a different path to navigate around the forest.
However, it hasn’t happened to me since I’ve beat the game.

Does that .bat thing work with KQ6 as well? That one won’t run on my computer either.

Participant(re: Problems with KQ V —-> Dark Forest) If you are talking about getting the Windows version of KQ6 going on Windows XP, it is more involved than that. You’ll need to have VDMSound installed on your system to do it, but you will need it to play the older KQ games with audio, anyway.
1) Download VDMSound from http://vogons.zetafleet.com/ndldownload.php?filename=VDMSound2.1.0.exe and install it.
2) Go to the KQ6 shortcut in your start menu and right click on it and choose “Properties”. Copy what is in the “Target:” box and paste it in Notepad. Save it in the games folder as KQ6.bat.
3) Copy the file “RESOURCE.AUD” from the CD to the installed game folder on your hard drive.
4) Open your game’s installed folder on your hard drive and if you find the file “HDLOGO.AVI,” delete it. Open the file “SIERRA.INI” (it may be in a sub-folder named “WIN”) in Notepad. Look for the lines:
audpath=D:
audio=D:
movieplayer=1
(Note, yours may be different, depending on what letter drive your CD-ROM is.) Chang this to:
audpath=.
audio=.
movieplayer=0
Note that there should be a backslash after the “D:” and the “=.” but, it doesn’t show on this board.
5) Right click on the file in the installed folder, “SCIWV.EXE” and go to the Compatibility tab and choose Compatibility mode for Win 98 or Win 9, 256 colors. do the same for the file you made earlier, “KQ6.bat”
6) Now all you have to do is right click on the .bat file you made and choose “♫ Run with VDMS” (the one with the musical notes) and the game should run.
You will find a new file in the installed folder — “KQ6.VLP” When you want to play the game after this, just double click on this file. You can copy this file to your desktop, your start menu or where ever you find easy to get at to run the game.

I don’t see how a file could become corrupted on a CD. Check your CD for scratches, smudges, abrasions etc.

That sometimes happens and isn’t good. If the CRC check fails, probable your cd is damaged beyond repair. However you could clean it and try it in a different CD drive. If you manage to read the CD, make a cd image and record it.
