ParticipantI’m having a really hard time getting Kings Quest 5 to run in either Windows XP or dos. This is the stand alone cd version. I have tried the dosbox way with vdmsound and all sound options but I either get lockup at the start with no sound or music only and no voice/text. I have finally got the windows version installed under WIndows XP but when the game starts the sound/music works perfectly except i have NO MOUSE Cursor at all. Please any ideas as to get my cursor to show? Thanks.

ParticipantDOS doesn’t seem to work in XP, though I guess DOSBOX mgiht help.
If your mouse cursor isn’t present, make sure you have resolution at 256 colours, and that your resource.win file has a mouse driver setup.

Participantumm yes i have tried Dosbox.. i cannot get the sound/music combo to work with VDM Sound. I am obviously running the game in 256 colors or it wouldn’t start.. and my resolution is 640 * 480. The game starts perfectly under Windows XP and the sound/music/video works the only thing that is a problem is NO MOUSE Cursor 🙁 The drivers listed under my configuration files are STDMOUSE.DRV which is in my game directory.

ParticipantWell, try copying stdmouse.drv to your C:/windows/system32 folder, or wherever the drivers are located.

ParticipantIf you put it in your %SystemRoot%\SYSTEM32 directory, the game will never find it. Are you talking about the Windows version or the DOS version having the mouse problem? They use different config files. The Windows version uses WINRES.CFG while the DOS uses RESOURCE.CFG. Both should have the mouseDrv=STDMOUSE.DRV line.

ParticipantI am talking about the windows version of the game which I installed under Windows xp from the cdrom by setting resolution to 640*480 256 colors. The Config file in the windows game directory has the mouse driver setup as STDMOUSE.DRV and everything looks good but its still not showing me a cursor when the game starts 🙁 I’ve tried renaming the driver putting it somewhere else using my own mouse drivers and pointing them to the right spot in the config file and it still doesn’t work. Ive also had no more luck with the dos version and vdmsound as I get a mouse with a cursor np but either music and no sound/speech or sound but no speech/music. Any help greatly appreciated.

ParticipantDid you mount your CD-ROM in DOSBox? Try copying the AUDIO001.002 file from your CD to installed directory and change the audio= line from what ever your CD drive’s letter to
audio=.\
then run SIERRA.EXE in DOSBox.
