      Grmphhhhh…..

I have tried EVERYTHING, and I repeat: everything which has been described here and elsewhere to get GK running on my Win 2000 Pro (not the fastest in the world with 400 MHz and 128 RAM), but, unlike with other old games, have been more than unsuccessful until now.

First I installed the game from CD. I tried all possibilities, large, medium and small. I installed the gkcdpat. I changed the resource.cfg. Etc. etc…. I tried to run it with or without VDMS. Even tried the Windows version which was the worst.

Anything I try to get started in the DOS box ends up with a black screen.

Starting in Windows gives me cryptic fatal error messages in German (because I have the German version of the game, and also assume that is because I only have the DOS version on CD, at least, there is only an install.exe and not setup.exe).

Not being totally computer illiterate and having tried so many things… does any of you have a hint how to get started? Would love to play this game again, too.

      Thanks so much in advance,

      Cat

Unfortunately, this game is a pain on XP and I would imagine it is the same on 2k. A few have had some success with DOSBox. You can search VOGONS for GK1 for help on this, but, your computer is really too slow for DOSBox. There is someone (Endroz) that is developing patches for the GK bugs, but you will have to wait. His site can be found here:

In the mean time, you could always get a copy of Windows 98 and do a dual boot on your computer with both 98 and 2k and play the game in 98.

(re: Need help with GK I on Win 2000!!!) Thanks for your reply. I guess I might give DOS Box a chance and install it tonight when I get home from work. I will let you know whether I was sucessful or not…

(re: Need help with GK I on Win 2000!!!) Actually I have been running Gabriel Knight 1 on XP on a P3-600 Mhz, 128 Megs RAM just using VDM sound, perfectly with speech etc. I never had any trouble setting it up, and both the Windows and DOS versions run great.

Win 98 would be certain to get the DOS version running, but you will not get digital sound effects or speech unless you have a legacy Sound Blaster card installed.

My advice would be to do what I did and just upgrade to Win XP, and rebuild your machine (i.e. new software isntalls) from scratch.

(re: Need help with GK I on Win 2000!!!) I had to do a lot of tweaking with the config file to get mine to work on XP. What does your config file look like, Ants Bull?

EDIT: I believe it was the DOSBOX config file..not the game file.

Ants Bull, how did you get around the save bug that you get with GK1 on XP?

(re: Need help with GK I on Win 2000!!!) Ants Bull, thanks for your answer. Great to hear that you have no prob with the game, but I strictly refuse to switch to XP (I would not really wanna call it upgrade *eg*).

      To all:
I installed the DOS Box last night and – oh WOW – got GK running, but!!!…. in a 25% window, VEEEEEERYYYY slow (the intro took about 30 minutes!!!) and with a sound that does NOT deserve this name 😉

      Question:
Could I post my DOSBox config-file in here so someone who has struggled through the same problems would be able to tell me how to get it right?

Won’t be able to do this until later tonight though or even later this week.

      Thanks to all.

(re: Need help with GK I on Win 2000!!!) Hi, Cat. Yes, post your config file content here so we can compare. If I can remember, there’s a fullscreen value that must be set to True. I’m not sure why it would be running slow though.

ps. btw, I’m JulesThe from the sierra boards 🙂 Hi!

(re: Need help with GK I on Win 2000!!!) It’s possible that the Turbo might be set at slow or not at all. The Limited Edition has the Turbo on the install discs, although there might still be the patches and Turbo at Sierra/VU. As for screen size it should be set at 800/600 256 color to run properly.

As I’ve said before, if it deals with Adventure games or High Quality games… I am there. (o:3 BEAR

Just press ALT+ENTER while DOSBox is running to make it fullscreen.
