Hi… long ago in a galaxy far, far away I played a game named King’s Quest in an IBM machine that had the look of a suitcase. It only had 2 (maybe 3) colors and the disks were those big, slim, black ones and the game made a couple of beeps and that was all.
Then I played another version. I remember that it turned on color if you pressed the Esc key at the main screen before the game. This time it came in the smaller disks and you had to reboot your system to play. I remember that the game broke up if you wanted to save your play.
Afterwards, I played another version. This time I made all the way up to the three treasures but at the moment I was in front of the king he barely hesitated (in the last few years somebody told me that you had to “bow to the king”).
At last, I got a King’s Quest collection (the one with the brown box and the King Graham in gold). I played the game and was all different. It had full color, it had some points to score and at the last you didn’t even need to bow at the king.
As you might see… these are very different versions of the same game. Lastly I’ve found an apple emulator that seems to let you play the first game shown before. Results in my machine were null… Anyone can help me on how to get these (really) older versions of KQ1 and how to play them in a today computer?

(re: Looking for King’s Quest I (original) ) I’m only familiar with the Apple II, II GS, C-64, IBM PCjr, DOS “Flopper”, and finally DOS 2.2 versions of the game, which are all mostly the same.
The PCjr version is the biggest change from the other versions, but still looks and plays very similar. The two other extreme versions of KQ1 is the EGA remake in 1990 and the Sega Master Version, which looked great, played awful.
Since all of the versions of the game I play/own are already in color, I can’t verify any other versions of the game that I have already listed.
Are you sure they were bootlegs, pirates, cracks, or warez?

The AGI version of King’s Quest is the very first King’s Quest. It was written for the IBM PC Jr to showcase the expanded abilities of the that machine (more colors, 3 voices to the music, etc.) It was then ported to the PC and then to other platforms. There are two versions of KQ1 in both collections. The older AGI version and the SCI remake. What you are remembering was probably played on a machine with a graphics card that was not capable of displaying all of the colors.

(re: Looking for King’s Quest I (original)) In the original AGI Sierra games such as the King’s Quests and Black Cauldron, if you had CGA (instead of EGA), they used to come up in 2-colour Black and White mode and if you pressed Ctrl+R (I think) they would switch into 4-colour CGA mode (with dithered colours) or 16-colour composite CGA depending on your monitor – you could also press the ESC key and navigate to the option in the menu’s. I think this is maybe what Raul is talking about.

It sounds like it was King’s Quest 1, but the crashes he talks about are maybe because he had a corrupt disk.

Raul, you can play the original KQ1 on a PC using the NAGI interpreter (just search for NAGI in google). You don’t need an Apple ][ emulator.

The crashes because of a corrupt disk are indeed because of saving. When the bootable version of KQ1 saved a game, it did so in a way that stopped the disk from being bootable. IIRC, the game itself had a command “format disk”, which created a “play disk” which was identical to the original game disk in every way. It was even bootable. Saving a game, though, made the game playable from that disk, but not bootable.

Wow! I still remember that… I swear that having to copy the disks on my aunt’s computer is what got me started on my interest (and ultimately career) in computers! 🙂
