ParticipantWhen Roger is being stripped of his command it lists all the things he did wrong. They also commend him for the same return of the SCS Eureka…..wha? Correct me if I am wrong, but in SQ5 you take the SCS Goliath home and set the autodestruct to the Eureka to kill the pukoid slime. This some sort of name mistake? I mean, it happened that way when I played SQ5….was there some sort of alternate ending to SQ5 or was this a major typo?

Participant(re: Little mistake in Sq6) As one of the programmers of Space Quest 6, I think it’s a safe bet for me to say that Josh and Scott didn’t play SQ5. SQ5 was done at Dynamix by a non-Oakhurst crew. There were some sore feelings.

I thought they commended him for returning the Goliath, not the Eureka. Am I wrong?

Actually I am currently replaying that part of the game (my savegame was deleted! 🙁 ) and it said Eureka…

Participant(re: re: Little mistake in Sq6) The Eureka was definitely an issue, but I think they blamed him for its destruction (which is correct yet silly since the evil Cpt. Quirk i.e. the monster he had become wouln’t have been defeated hadn’t it been for Roger activating the Eureka’s self-destruction sequence.)
This is btw one more game I can’t play no more because of incompatibility with new hardware. There is one point where it crashes (right after DNA analysis) and there used to be a savegame to get past this point – which didn’t work for me… :o( It was one of my favorites and the only reason I bought a CD-ROM drive back then (Which were already a standard, but I’d always been a bit behind with the hardware)! I preordered this one, waited for ages and when I finally called the mail-order company they told me they were waiting for it to be translated to German! I thought I’d drop dead! I had my copy in no time then, after telling them that English would be OK. :o)
A fine game really. I once read a review on JA dubbing it the worst Space Quest yet but I think it was one of the best. Oops! TMI. I always get carried away when it’s about Space Quest… ;o) -

Participant(re: re: re: Little mistake in Sq6) Paul, what game are you referring to? In Space Quest 6 the whole back-to-janitor-story is in the intro, nothing to play there. In SQ5 it’s rather clear – destroy the Eureka to save the Goliath. Couldn’t it be that Roger was decommisioned for *NOT* returning the Eureka safely?
Gotta look at that again, at least the intro still runs! -

No No, I have to restart the game because my saves were erased. At the intro they say “However, we commend you for the safe return of the SCS Eureka”…..but the Eureka exploded into tiny bits. The Goliath was the one that was safely returned…yet they are thanking you for returning the ship that you already destroyed.

Participant(re: re: re: re: re: Little mistake in Sq6) Oops! You’re right! I looked at the intro again and then I even remembered wondering about the “safe return of the SCS Eureka” when I first saw it. I thought that maybe there was an alternative ending or something and just accepted it – Hey! It was Space Quest! It had to be right! ;o)
Of course that’s not the only plot inconsistency. But does it really matter? I’ve loved all of these games (including SQ0 and SQTLC) and I’m really hoping that the sq7.org team will stick with their project and continue the saga. They say there will even be an optional parser in the game – is that cool or what? -

The part about the DNA analysis is a speed issue. If you disable your CPU cache and play that scene you should be able to get through. At least that’s worked for me on all the speed sensitive issues I’ve had with the old games on a new system.

Participant(re: re: Little mistake in Sq6) I got past that part using a slowdown utility called Turbo. I set it to 40% and I got by fine.

Bob,
Hey there!
I can’t speak for Scott, but I certainly played through SQ5, a couple of times at least. No sore feelings on my part, otherwise I wouldn’t have helped write the Galactic Inquirer (Mark had me do a couple of articles for that “doco”).
