ParticipantI got a chance to play this game last night, so I thought I’d chime in with a few comments. I didn’t really expect much (I’m rather surprised it wasn’t cancelled), but it’s actually pretty good. The humour is in-your-face, as you’d expect from a Larry game, but it’s often pretty funny and it’s got some really funny visual gags.
The story centers around Larry’s nephew. Uncle Larry is your adviser throughout and you can call on him (literally) if you’re stuck.
The game world is Larry’s campus, and you’re allowed to roam around free form. Your goal is, of course, to hit on the ladies, and you do this by playing through several mini games, like conversation (yeah, it sounds strange, but the conversation system is built up like a game where the object is to steer a semen in the right direction), throwing coins, mixing drinks etc. It’s all about doing all these mini games, as far as I can figure, so there doesn’t seem to be any chance to do any “questing”, although there are adventure aspects here, but I guess I have to play it more to see how it works out.
For now, I’m pleasantly surprised the game has turned out so well.

No way, I thought the release date was in October? Have you ever been to the Larry forums at sierra.com? They’d love to hear from you. 🙂

I can pay them a visit, but I’m sure they’re all over it by now. I’ve got a review copy (lucky me), but it was released 9/4. I guess they pushed it up for an early release. 🙂

I played the game also. For the xbox. It was sortof fun taking turns with my freind on all the minigames like dancing and gathering girls for a pimp. But it does have the same style as most games do now.. its almost entirly based on minigames. The humor is funny but definitly doesnt have the original larry feel and quality. But hey its good larry is living on in some way.. just to remind the future of the past…

Lucky guys, what country are you in? I’ll be getting it sometime nearby when it comes out. I’m not going to judge it against LSL 1-7, instead just play it for what it is. Are there any significant references to the older games?

Having first learned about sex from LSL1 (okay, maybe that’s pushing it, but I was certainly too young to be playing it), I’ve been anticipating this game for a while. It’s really too bad that Sierra didn’t involve Al at all and led him on, I think it’s obvious when you play the game that he didn’t have anything to do with it.
Without comparing it too much to other Larry’s, I can say that the game is quite funny. Unfortunately, you’ll miss quite a bit of the humor because you’re too busy guiding sperm around obstacles. And there are definitely plenty of homages to the Larry of old (Lefty’s Too, multiple jokes about 16 colors, a bulletin board featuring past ladies). The mini-games are pretty repetetive, but fortunately, they’re not annoying or overly tedious. And you can always do some drinking (in game) to make them more challenging if you need.
Now, the lack of Al’s influence… I guess it comes down to the fact that this game relies much more heavily on the “Adult” aspect of Larry. That is, the entire game is littered with vulgarities and overly crude jokes. Much of what I love about Larry is that while it’s adult in nature, it doesn’t try to push that envelope or say “Hey, this is an ADULT game. Yeah, for GROWN ups, not KIDS.” Al Lowe can be funny without resorting to American Pie-type jokes. The humor in the new game is definitely Al influenced, but it’s obviously imitation.
That said, I am enjoying the game. I have about 30% completed and have heard you can finish the game with less than 80%. In all, as long as you KNOW you aren’t getting a point-and-click adventure game, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. (And they do reference point-and-click as well.) Hope you enjoy, and I’m interested to hear other thoughts.

For those who are unsure if they want to spend their money on LSL:MCL there is a German demo (~200 MB) that you can download and play to get a feel for the game. Here are links to a places you can download it from:

Minus the jokes and the conversations….wouldn’t the game just get dull?

Woah! The creators of this fucking retarded piece of sh… crap need to get laid badly – I played the demo about half a minute and it already was way too much for me. There’s nothing about Leisure Suit Larry in it.

Vivendi’s Leisure Suit Larry banned in Australia
Rob Fahey 15:25 12/10/2004
Vivendi Universal Games’ forthcoming adventure title Leisure Suit Larry: Magna Cum Laude has been denied certification by Australia’s main classification body, essentially banning it from sale in the country.
The Office of Film and Literature Classification (OFLC) took exception to the portrayal of sexual activity in the game, particularly in light of “obscured or implied sexual activity and obscured and partial nudity involving stylised animated characters.”
The game, which has been given an 18+ rating under the PEGI voluntary classification system in Europe, follows the misadventures of the eponymous Larry as he stumbles through various romantic and sexual encounters in university.
The decision of OFLC to ban the game from Australian shelves follows only weeks after the increasingly censorious board decided to revise its original judgement on Manhunt, withdrawing classification on the game (and thus banning it) after having originally granted it an MA15+ certificate.

ParticipantHow do they plan to stop people from making an online purchase/download?

ParticipantMaybe the sale is just illegal, not the actual ownership …

ParticipantI finally got a chance to play this magna-um opus. I keep getting the feeling they’d planned a “Larry” version of The Simpsons: Hit and Run, minus the cars. The entire menu system of the game is layed out the same way. If only they’d come up with more mini-games and more varied activities. Hit and Run was limited in that aspect as well, but at least you could drive in it.
Larry Lovage is a bit of a twerp. It’s obvious that the Laffer blood flows through his veins, (Hard to see how, since to my knowledge, Larry was an only child.) But he gives off just one too many pathetic whimpers whenever things don’t go his way. Leisure Suit Larry should be an icon of bravery in the face of nerdity, he shouldn’t “Lose confidence points and recieve a request from the game to lower the difficulty level.”
The ladies are Larry 6 and 7 fare. They’re parodic fantasy objects as opposed to the sane, normal women of the earlier games. Lovage expresses a vastly un-Larry-like trait by sneaking out his dorm room window every time a woman proves to be too much for him. Take a cue from your uncle Larry, Larry, you can’t be picky about these things, just let the woman put the ball-gag on you. It’s funny, or it was funny about the original games. At least they stay true to the convention that Larry never really gets lucky, just gets into several situations where he comes close.
Ultimately, LCLMCL is like staring at a woman through a pair of binoculars: good from afar but far from good. While the themes of Larry are prevailant through the saga, the humor falls extremely flat. It’s missing that great, big, throbbing, pulsating….heart that the original games had in spades, but at least it’s not a total waste of silicon.
