ParticipantFirst, to Ken and Roberta, thanks a zillion.
I have the KQC 3 cd set which I purchased years ago and all went well until I migrated operating systems.
I tried installing the collection on my machine (P4 / 3.2 / hyperthread / GForce 5900 / XP Pro).
The first problem I had was when the software tried to test my system. So I rebooted the machine and tried installing it without testing my system, and when I try to play any of the games, it says I have an invalid video card. I have set the compatability mode on all of the games.
I then installed the collection on my son’s computer (P3 / Win 98) and was fine till I tried to run KQ7. When I do that it says it can’t find sierra.err.
I have tried to let the setup check for updates, but I am guessing it has a problem with my router / DSL, as it says that I don’t have a valid internet connection.
Are there updates that I need to have to run these games on either XP Pro or Win 98?
Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.
John

Always skip the Sierra system checks on modern machines. Go to the CD and copy the folders for 1-4 and KQ1SCI to your Sierra folder on your hard drive. For 1-3, just run SIERRA.COM to play these games. If you have trouble with the text, play these three with NAGI.
For 1-4 and KQ1SCI, you can drag shortcuts to your desktop for easy access.
for 5 and 6, go to either game’s folder on the CDs (1st CD for 5, 2nd for 6) and run SETUP.EXE to install the Windows versions, or INSTALL.EXE to install the DOS versions. If you install the DOS versions, you will need to run them with VDMSound.
Notes about KQ5: Many have trouble getting the speech to work with the DOS version of KQ5, but the Windows version is subject to the infamous “Out of heap” error. For the Windows version, your screen resolution MUST be set to 640×480, 256 colors before you start the game (it checks your resolution before compatibility mode can change it) and XP hides this mode. You can get to it in the advanced disply settings, though. For a more convenient way, replacing the Windows shortcut with a batch file set to compatibility mode, 640×480, 256 will also work. See:

To get the Windows version of KQ6 running, it will be a little more involved, after you have installed it. See this thread for help:

Participant(re: re: KQC on XP and Win 98) I am doing what you suggested, however when I go to run the setup.exe from the KQ5 folder on the CD, it says that I have an incompatible video driver.
I have a GForce 5900

Participant(re: re: re: KQC on XP and Win 98) Collector,
I ran the install.exe on CD2 it poped up a dos-type window and appeared to install it fine.
I have compatability set to win98 and 256 colors(i also tried win 95).
On the properties, I had to change where it looked for sciwv.exe so that it looked at the e: drive where the CD is. This file does not exist in the c:\sierra\kq6cd\ folder that the forgram created when it installed it

INSTALL.EXE is for the DOS version, and SETUP.EXE is for the Windows version. To install the Windows version you will need to set your display to 640×480 256 colors in the advanced display settings. Right click on your desktop and choose Properties, go to the Settings tab and click the Advanced tab. Then go to the Adapter tab and click the “List All Modes…” button. Scroll up until you get to 640 by 480, 256 colors and select it. You will now be able to install the Windows version.
BTW, compatibility mode is of use only to Windows programs, not DOS programs.
