ParticipantHere’s the intro movie from the mac version of KQ6, in mpeg format. (It’s actually .M1V, but on my PC it launched with Windows Media Player). The file itself is rather large (abou 20 MB), but the zip file is only about 3 MB.
Unfortunately there’s no sound. That’s something I’m not sure if I can fix. (I converted this using an old piece of freeware for the mac…) However, I should be able to increase the framrate so it’s not quite as slow. (I think it converted at a slower framerate than the original.)
I prefer this movie to the one that comes on the PC version (which makes sense because it’s the first version I saw, so in my mind it’s the “right” one…) There’s no voiceover, just the text on screen and the music. I like that the movie is narrated, sort of like a fairy tale… this seems much more romantic to me. Also, Alexander sees Cassima in the mirror, but she’s just there… she’s not calling out for him. So the game starts with a little more mystery — will she return his affections? We don’t know… yet. In the PC version, I feel like that’s given away too quickly.
Anyway, enjoy (finally!)

I tried using Quick time and it didn’t work. I’m using a PC

Okay, I’ll futz with it. On my mac, I can simply add .mov to the file name and then can view it from within Quicktime (which is weird, because mac files generally don’t need extensions). However, if I upload it and then download it again, Quicktime doesn’t like the file anymore. I’ve tried uploading it here as well as to a website of my own, and in both cases have had the same problem. I’ll mess around with the file when I get home to my PC and see if I can figure this out.

Participant(Tried the KQ6 intro movie (mac)) Quicktime 6.1, neither files that you uploaded yesterday (the .mov and the zip) worked for me. I didn’t have time to try throwing them through a video converter yet though.

Our posts must have crossed — I just put up a new version that will hopefully work on a PC.

Participant(re: KQ6 intro movie (mac) – SUCCESS!) Just edited the original post about the mac movie, and added a new zip file that should work on PCs (at least, it works on mine). I’m posting this response so the thread will be displayed as a new message…

Great Emily! It’s cool to see that, even without the music – I could hear the music exactly in my head anyway 🙂 The whole narration text on screen is really interesting. Anyway, thanks, that was good to see.

ParticipantI just saw this movie- awesome! And like Brandon, I could hear the music in my head. 😀
I think I figured out why the movie is so bizarre (compared to ‘normal’ PC disk/CD versions)- it’s got to do with sound. Because the disk version has voices for the intro movie, as does the CD. Presumably the logistics of the Mac platform back then didn’t allow for the movie to either have sound, or to have music and sound, or something (I need someone who knows what they’re talking about to explain better!). So they cut sound out. Which also explains why his mother is absent in this version, since she only has conversational roles.
Anyway, I think anyone other than Emily would prefer the CD’s intro movie the best. 🙂 That Mac one is a cool find, but definitely sucky!

ParticipantI just dug up this thread because I’m reviewing KQ6 for Adventure Gamers and wanted to re-watch the Mac version of the movie. 🙂
(And it did have sound, originally. I just couldn’t figure out how to capture the sound when I made that video.)

ParticipantMaybe I’m missing something – but it’s a little odd that the Mac version of this intro looks far inferior to the PC version. Here’s the PC version of the CD-Rom edition, on Youtube:

Featuring better (and more) animation, along with somewhat higher resolution. And I remember the version included on floppy PC version also being superior to the Mac version discussed here.
It just seems odd – wasn’t Mac the top dog for graphic applications, at the time? -

ParticipantNot strange at all. It is a matter of porting. The game was primarily developed for the PC. Conversions were often poorly done. By the time that the game was released, Macs no longer had much of an edge over PCs. Amigas, which had out stripped Macs Graphics wise, usually had poor ports of Sierra games, too.

ParticipantFrom what I remember, the Mac floppy version looked better than the PC floppy version. But it’s been a long time since I played the Mac version, and I only checked out the PC one out of curiosity. Of course the PC CD-ROM version looks the best of them all. But yeah, usually the Mac versions of games would have better graphics and sound back in the 90s. It all depended on whether it was taken advantage of or not. I remember Dark Forces looked way better on my Mac than on the PC. Plus you couldn’t go wrong with the Mac interface. DOS/Windows 3.1 was so cumbersome.
