what message are you getting?
i have played this on XP with no problems, but i know compatibility on XP can differ from system to system… make sure you put it in compatibility mode (try win95).
the only problem i remember having with this was that i couldn’t run the game from my DVD drive and had to use my CD-RW. that could be because i installed from the CD-RW, not sure.

Also, Unless you have the first released version of the game, you should have both a DOS and a Windows version on your CD. You might want to try both. In any case, trying Win95 compability mode is definately a good idea and you might also need to use VDMSound or some other tool if it’s the sound that’s bugging you.
And beware of speed-related problems. For instance, there’s a puzzle in the game that requires you to carry a lit firecracker. It’s supposed to give you a minute or two before it blows up, but on my relatively slow computer it does so after about a second! Still, since the game allows you to return to the point before you died and the time seems to reset itself if you do so, it should still be possible to play through that sequence. It’s just very annoying…

Participant(re: Kings Quest VII:Not Working) You MUST have version 2 of the game to play the Windows version on XP. Earlier versions will crash on launch with a DLL error. Version 2 can be found on the 2nd collection and the Roberta Williams Anthology. I believe that there was a stand alone release of version 2, but I am not sure.
It is too bad that the versions that will not run on XP are also did not include the DOS version. -

I have a standalone CD, containing DOS and Windows (i can’t actually remember which I played on XP, i think it was the Windows version). Copyright 1994. According to the Version file on my CD it is version 2.00b.
So yes, there is at least one standalone version out there that runs on XP.

Version 2 (supporting Windows) was released as a stand-alone game, in a Sierra Originals budget version, on the second King’s Quest Collection (not the 15th Anniversary one) and on the Roberta Williams Anthology. So unless you are one of those people who picked up a copy right at the time this game was released and never bought any of the releases I mention, you should definately have version 2.0, supporting both DOS and Windows. I think you’re more likely to get the Windows version to look. It’s more a matter of case-to-case with SCI1 games (the ones with VGA graphics) but the SCI-32 games like KQ7 are more Windows-friendly and should be possible to get running in XP etc.
