Kings Quest 7 – Valanice still Queen?

Rosella is referred to constantly as Princess Rosella but Valanice is only referred to as lady Valanice. Why not Queen Valanice? Also, the flowers that eat Rosella said “must have been a princess” but do not say “must have been a queen” when they eat Valanice.

Interesting question. Apparently Valanice is a touch more modest than Rosella and doesn’t deem it proper to introduce herself as a Queen while she is in a foreign country. Also, since Rosella is both her daughter and a princess, it should be pretty obvious to the player that Valanice is a Queen.

Oh, I knew that Valanice was a Queen. Just seems strange how she doesn’t act as regal as she has in previous Kings Quests.

Maybe Valanice was the Lady of some place before she was a queen and so is a Lady as well, like how Princess Diana was sometimes called Lady Diana.

(re: Kings Quest 7 – Valanice still Queen?) If you’re the King or the Prince, then of course you barge into a place (to assert your manhood and your position!) and announce “I’m King (or Prince) so-and-so of such-and-such a place!”

If you’re the Princess, you do pretty much the same thing, because you assert your eligibility to be married by some handsome Prince.

But if you’re the Queen, well the King has all the power 😉 and you’re already married, so how often do you announce yourself as “Queen so-and-so”? Maybe when you get older you announce yourself as the Queen, but when you’re younger or middle-aged, you say “Lady” because it’s more elegant? More “proper”?

I dunno, just throwing around some ideas.

Here’s my guess: Edgar/the Troll King intended to pull only Rosella through. Edgar goes around at the beginning of the game addressing Rosella as “Princess”, and the other trolls, Malicia, and Oberon and Titania probably learn from him that she’s a princess, since he knows her already. I don’t recall her ever introducing herself as a princess, and I do remember that Dr. Mort Cadaver addresses her by her name only, without any title.

Valanice, on the other hand, came through by accident, and there’s really no reason for her to go around advertising herself as a queen, since it takes her quite a while to encounter any sort of kingdom-like area, as opposed to Rosella, who starts out in the troll kingdom.

As for the flowers? I have no clue. I don’t think I’ve gotten either of them eaten by the flowers since my first run through the game ten years or so ago.
