In King’s Quest 3, as most KQ fans know, you face the evil wizard Manannan. After you turn Manannan into a cat, you flee to Daventry, and live with your family.

Later, in KQ 5, Alex and his family (Minus Graham) are kidnapped by Manannan’s brother Mordack. Who wants revenge on Alexander for turning Mana into a cat. Alex of course, as a wizard, has no idea on how to transform Mana back. (Though it would have been cool if it had ended with Mana transforming back into himself, and you have to fight both wizards or something but it ended more strongly I guess)

Then in KQ6, Alexander overhears Abdul talking as he writes a letter to another wizard. Talking about how he’s marrying “Cassima”

Then you find a letter from the other wizard saying how he wasn’t dispointed about Mordack’s death because he was always a ninny at chess or something like that. (Poor Mordack)

So that links four of the characters under the banner of the “Black Cloak”.

Obviously Mana wore a black cloak, Abdul had alot of them into his closet, and Mordack kinda wore one.

I’m just wondering if perhaps Haggatha, or Lolotte were also members of this group? Or is that a stupid idea?

I don’t really think so. Hagatha was merely jealous of Valanice’s beauty, and Lolote was more interested in conquering the fairies than she was in doing any harm to Rosella. I think in the KQ5 manual they actually DID label Mordack as a member of the black cloak, as did Al-Hazred when writing that letter to this dark society. One really wonders what they had against the crown of Daventry, or short of that, why they wanted to take over all these kingdoms.

After VI, it kinda leaves open the whole black cloak thing. Actually, besides King Graham’s family (what is their last name anyway?), the black cloak brotherhood turned out to be one of the only continuous threads in the series. I feel like it’s unresolved, like the heart of the organization is still at large. Even though I love VII, it seems like that was the beginning of the wheels sort of falling off of King’s Quest. It was trying different things and not selling as well, and by VIII it had totally changed.

Probably because Lorelei Shannon did most of the design and writing on KQ7.

But King’s Quest VII takes a great deal of its continuity from King’s Quest IV. We learn what has happened to Edgar since that game, (Kidnapped and mutated again) and we find out where his Kingdom is. Malicia is an enemy to the Fairy Kingdom just as Lolote was in the fourth game.

One thing I didn’t understand about the continuity between KQ5 and KQ6 was Mordack’s intent to kidnap Princess Cassima. Did he intend to kill her and allow Al Hazred’s reign to go un-abaited, and if so why did he even wait for Graham to show up and spoil the whole thing?
