I just recently remembered about the Johnny Castaway screensaver. It was probably the most amusing screensaver I’ve seen and I believe that it was published by Sierra. In fact I remember downloading it from the old web-page. Does anybody have any idea how this funny little program came to exist and if there ever were any different versions?

It was done by Jeff Tunnell (Dynamix). And here is the original file that was freely downloadable from Sierra’s site (but I zipped it up since SierraGamers does not allow EXEs to be uploaded). Be careful, if you just execute the EXE file which is contained in this zip file, it self-extracts to whatever directory it is currently in. Maybe Ken knows more history behind it, if so it’d be cool to hear. I loved this screensaver too. I will sooner or later also have to get in touch with Jeff at which time this is one thing for sure I’ll ask him about. I don’t know if there were different versions, or if this was ever sold in stores, but this is Version 1.01 / Date 2/6/97. If anyone remembers this in stores in a package, let us know!

(re: re: Johnny Castaway) I don’t know that I can add anything to what has been said, other than….
This was strictly Jeff Tunnel’s baby (well .. with lots of help from Randy Dersham and others). It’s a VERY cool, and fun product – and, Sierra should have taken it more seriously. We sold a ton of copies. I’m not sure why we didn’t upgrade it, and re-release it. I remember at the time hearing that modern LCD screens didn’t need screen savers – but, forgot that sometimes people buy things irrespective of whether or not they have any purpose. Oh well …. this is just one item on a long list of things I would do differently if given the chance.
