ParticipantToday was a busy day for the website – the busiest ever. The stats show roughly double the number of daily visitors, and three times the average number of messages read. It isn’t new visitors – we only had five newbies today, so … ???
Anyway .. one comment on the stats: In an effort to reduce drag on my server, I deliberately minimized the number of page views required for someone to find what they are looking for. You may have noticed that the site is free – and, that there is no advertising. I’m not looking to make money, but neither is my goal to lose it in mass quantities. Unlike some other sites, the stats on this site are not only NOT rigged, but tend to underplay what a busy site this is. Were I to report using the same “techniques” used by some other sites, you would see MUCH bigger numbers.
None of which is particularly relevant to anything…
I was just wondering about the spike in activity.

PS Today was a travel day for me. We moved from our our home in the US to our home in Mexico. I’m tired, and calling it a night. See you all tomorrow!
PSPS … Everyone owes Brandon Klassen, one of our sysops here, a BIG favor (especially me). He just spent five days of his life in Seattle with Al Lowe, Roberta and myself, digging through various closests, drawers and even a freezing cold storage unit – to find old Sierra-related “stuff” – and scan it. There will be a lot of cool things appearing here, thanks to Brandon’s efforts. Thank you Brandon! -

Participant(re: Hmmm .. I wonder why?) I was looking at the stats today too and I thought to myself, “this must be a bug.” For example, in the recorded space of only 2 minutes, the entire website history page (only viewable by admin) was filled with only Visitor: Just Logged In. It struck me as very odd.
As for the visit I made down to Seattle, it was my pleasure, and as Ken said there will indeed be plenty of cool things appearing here. I’ve probably gone crazy from scanning now, last night when I got home, the only thing I dreamt about was scanning all night long! -

Heh, do we owe him a big favour or should we just be envious? Anyway, Brandon, looking forward to the “stuff” you’ve unearthed.

Just as a response to Ken’s side note I would like to point out that now would be a great time to check out the Mexican weather if you live in the Seattle area. This winter is quite a bit cooler than usual. Plus, none of us know how to drive in the snow.

could the activity have spiked because some kind of spider or automated spambot (i made that word up) is hitting the site?

Participant(re: re: re: Hmmm .. I wonder why?) I hope so!
Currently, the search engines don’t really cover this site – because much of the site is hidden until you register. I’m not sure how to handle this, but know there is a solution. I’m currently swamped, so I’m not really focused on the search engine issue yet, but know it’s one I’ll have to focus on soon.

Participant(re: re: re: re: Hmmm .. I wonder why?) Ken – a few tips for that issue: first, add META tags. (in the part) Well actually, you should first fix the mess you’ve got there! you have 2 meta tags referring to “robots”, and you need to fix the “copyright” and “expires” meta tags. but primrily – fix the most important meta-tag – “keywords”. currently, it’s “association, club, fan”… you should swamp that meta tag with company names (“Sierra, Sierra On-Line, On-Line systems” …), games (“Quest for Glory, Hero’s quest, Space Quest, Leisure Suit Larry” …) keywords relating to the content of the website (“games, museum, tips, technical help, bugs, hints, TSN,INN”..) and miscellaneous words (“classic games, adventure games, SCI, AGI, Ken Williams, Roberta Williams, Al Lowe” … you get the point… Also, referring to the pages that cannot be accessed without registering, I recommend opening sections like “Sierra History”, “Computer History”, “Sierra Links” entirely! I suggest opening “Game Bugs/ Tech help”, which is a very active page, in order to attract more visitors to register, as well as optimizing the site for the search engines (that will find more information in the website and rate you higher)… lastly to register to every search-engine you can find; (use free-of-charge listing), eventually the website will surface very high in the search-engines’ databases without putting any money to them. -Eyal

Thanks! I’ll add these all to my “to do list” – this is an area I’ve never had to deal with before. Up to now, I’ve not really felt the site was ready for lots of traffic, so I’ve tried to downplay things. After the next major upgrade to this site is released (another couple of weeks), I’ll shift my attention to this issue.
