ParticipantI have just bought Gabriel Knigth 1.
I can get the games to work with the voices. Im under Windows XP, and when the voices are actived, the game just crashes before the title screen.
I have the DOS version.
Is there a way to play with the voices ? -

Participant(re: Gabriel Knight 1) I think it’s ‘common’ knowledge that you’ll not be able to get the DOS version of GK1 working under Win2K/XP. I think your only option is to track down a copy of the Windows version. This will definitely work with the following known issues: you cannot save anywhere in the game except on the map screen (it’ll just crash if u try….) and there are one (maybe two) timing issues with ‘modern’ CPU speeds.

Participant(re: re: Gabriel Knight 1) GK1 DOS just work fine under XP. Only the voices are missing. Its not a big problem, the game is playable. But it will be better with voices.
Can I play my dos game, just putting the sierraw.exe launcher in my GK1DOS folder ?
Have someone the win version ? Can he send me the win launcher ? -

If you are using VDMSound, be sure to check “Enable low level CD-ROM support (MSCDEX)” in your VDMS shortcut properties so that the game can see your CD-ROM drive. The resource file with the speech is on the CD.

Participant(gabriel knight mac)
hello, I have gabriel knight 1 for mac and it crashes in the iddle of the game (in the dragon animation part, where gabriel becomes an janthenjagger) and near the end of the game, where I’m trying to play the rada drums.
It just says some kind of error and then it crashes.
I have a iMac G3/233 Mhz with os 9.2.2.
I would apreciate any kind of help since this is one of my favorite games.
Thank you. -

It’s a type 12 error.

Participant(re: Gabriel Knight 1) I’m playing the DOS version under WIN XP right now and everything seems to work fine, except for one thing: The game locks up at the beginning of day 5 just when the phone rings. I’ve tried to play under both WIN XP and 98 and exactly the same thing happens every time. I’m starting to wonder if the problem lies in the game itself, maybe there’s something wrong with the version I have.
But of course this could be a speed problem also, I’m just not sure what the problem is, but I’ll continue to try different things to try to get the game to work.
Meanwhile I would be very grateful if someone could send me a savegame from the beginning of day 5 or show me a site that has GK1 savegames.
Thanks! -

Wow… I didn’t know you could play the DOS version under XP! (I could never get it to work.)
Are you using VDMSound? If yes, try playing the game without it just so you can get through the point with the crash. I had to do this in a few places with the DOS version of GK2.
Have you tried slowing down the game with Turbo or Moslo? If it’s a speed issue, that should help. (I never got this far in the game, I don’t think… are you past the part with the beignet guy at the police station yet?)
What version of the game do you have? The DOS games are very particular when it comes to versions, so it might work better if you can find someone who has the same version as you who can load up your saved game, play through that spot, and send it back to you. I have the GK Mysteries version and will happily load it up on win98 to help you out, if that’s the version you have too.

ps for the mac user, I’m sorry, I tried to find more info for you about the type 12 error but wasn’t able to come up with anything.

Participant(re: Gabriel Knight 1) I’m not using VDMSound, so that’s not the issue anyway. I haven’t tried slowing the game down yet, but I’ll give it a try.
I’m pretty far past the point that, I think, you’re talking about. There’s 10 days in the game and I’m at the beginning of day 5, so I still have pretty much left to play, but it’s so much fun that I don’t want the game to end anyway.
I have the 1.0 version, which you probably don’t have so no luck there either I guess. But I’ll try to slow down the game and see if that does the trick.
Thanks very much for the help, emily! -

Participant(re: re: Gabriel Knight 1)
If the crash is occuring on both win98 and XP, maybe it is a game problem that can be patched? Have you applied any patches?
Sierra’s ftp site lists what appear to be three patches for GK1. They are
gkcdpat.exe
gkerr407.exe
gkpat.exeMaybe one (or more) of these will help. Link to the ftp site is below.
Unfortunately, with most of Sierra’s DOS games, the saves won’t be recognized once you’ve applied the patch (because the patch changes the version of the executable). Maybe you can find an explanation online somewhere of what these patches are supposed to do, so you can find out before you apply them if they’re intended to fix crashes like the one you’re experiencing.

Participant(re: re: Gabriel Knight 1) Have you tried running it in DOSBox? DOSBox will take care of all the timing bugs.

Participant(re: Gabriel Knight 1) I found the problem! It was a speed problem, but ironically the game was running too slow and not too fast.
I found this at Sierra’s KnowledgeBase:
“Problem:
Lockup at beginning of chapter 5Solution:
Turn the Speed slider control (located in the control panel) all the way up prior to the end of Day 4. The Speed control is unavailable during the ending sequence of Day 4 and the beginning of Day 5, so it may be necessary to restore to a previous save game to do this.Note: Move the control towards the right to turn it up and to the left to turn it down.”
It worked like a charm! Thanks, Sierra, for still having tips around about the older games also. -

Aww…where did you get GK1? I’ve been looking for the CD version in stores to no avail..

Participant(re: Gabriel Knight 1) Well, as I said I got past the problem I had earlier, but now I’ve hit another snag.
If you haven’t played the game and don’t want to read any spoilers, stop reading now!
In day 5 or 6 you should write this coded message on the Laveau tomb wall in the cemetery and I was pretty sure that I was on the right track earlier also, but after not getting it to work after many tries I looked in several walkthroughs and tried to get the message right. I’ve come to the conclusion that this game hates me – the bloody game still says that the message isn’t right.
Major spoilers coming up! The message is supposed to be “dj bring sekey madoule”, but after entering that message and pressing the exit button, Gabriel just wipes out the message and says something about having a feeling that the message isn’t quite right.
Is there someone here who could help me with this problem? Am I doing something wrong, or what? -

Participant(Gabriel Knight, error on Day 10)
The game crashes once I try to use the snake wand on the knothole in the cathedral, and reports something like “Can’t open 803.snd/something” and a reference to some obscure script. Has anyone else experienced this? I’m so close to completing the game, so it’s too bad it happened so late in the game 🙁
By the way, this is the floppy version (1.0)

Andreas! I had the SAME problem! I was playing on XP and I was SOOOOO excited to find the hounfour but nooooo the dumb computer had to give me an error! 😛 I tried everything but nothin was working! Luckily my sister has a windows 98 and I played it error-free on that to the end. But! If you dont have a 98 handy, I’d try running it on DosBox. Go to zetafleet.vogons.com and search for DosBox–it’ll direct you where to download it and they’ll even give you handy instructions for computer illiterate people like myself! (you just have to search for it) Here’s my link where I asked about the problem on the forums.

Possibly that will help?

oops.. that link is vogons.zetafleet.com it’s the other way around. I tried to hit the Edit button on my message but it took me to the home page! Is there a link linked to a different link?

Participant(re: Gabriel Knight, error on Day 10) Hey Julie!
It’s good (sort of) to hear I’m not the only one having problems with this. But…I’m playing the game on an old 486 with Dos 6.2, which should in theory be the ultimate for playing sierra games from that period. But in case dosbox actually works better than the “real thing”, I’ll try it 🙂 Thanks -

Participant(re: Gabriel Knight, error on Day 10) Just to let you know… there was a problem with a website update where you couldn’t edit your own messages. But that problem has now been fixed.
