Hello Ken,
I remember just before Sierra started to ship CD-ROM’s…Sierra needed to increase there box packaging size to accommodate the amount of floppy disks. Did Sierra handle disk duplication internal or out source this job to someone else….after all; we are talking thousands of these floppy disks! 🙂 This reminds me of a drawing that was in your Interaction magazine showing a UPS driver carrying a HUGE Kings Quest Box on his back! It made me laugh. Does anyone remember this drawing?

(re: Duplication) I don’t remember the drawing you are referring to – but, I do remember duplicating disks – by the thousands. Roberta and I copied personally at first, then hired neighborhood kids, then starting hiring lots of people to duplicate disks. It was a MAJOR job. We also wrote programs to read back in the disks, to verify that they were duplicated correctly.
We always talked about outsourcing duplication – but, never did it. We couldn’t replicate the quality or pricing of doing it ourselves.

Over the weekend I picked up a floppy disk version of Police Quest: Open Season in a box. (Yes, it was another good weekend… I also got a shrinkwrapped SQ1 VGA!) I originally had PQ4 for the Mac, which was on CD, so the box was much slimmer. I did a double-take when I saw that HUGE box in the store!
I don’t remember the UPS cartoon, but I do remember an easter egg in (I think?) Space Quest 4, where Roger comes across a King’s Quest game in a bargain bin at the mall… something along the lines of King’s Quest: Quest for the Missing Floppies. Anyone remember this?
