ParticipantDoes sq6 contain any copy protection of any kind?,because i found arranging the irk’s chips and plates in the datacorder,or the homing beacon insanely difficult with astronomical combinations and next to impossible to achieve without it printed in the manual which it wasnt.I got the game from the Sierra collection”Adventure” 3 out-of-this world games.Roger had to do this to teleport off the hotels roof. The other games included in the pack where,”Lighthouse”-the dark being, and Police Quest-Open Season. Thanks

That is the copy protection.

Participant(re: re: Does sq6 have copy protection?) Actually no that is not the copy protection, it might seem like it but it is not, both Scott Murphy and Josh Mandel have confirmed it. It’s a bloody pain in the ass I admit that and the hints in the manual help little or not at all.
All walkthroughs available on the net have the solution for the puzzle. -

ParticipantWhere did Scott and Josh said this? And did you ever consider the possibility that they said it only to cover up the fact that some releases of this game were shipped without the manual?
I don’t know… I took a look at it and I don’t see how you can stand a chance of solving this puzzle without the manual. And beside this puzzle, there’s another puzzle for which you need the periodic table, which is also in the manual. How can you solve this one without it? -

ParticipantI find this an interesting debate. Scott/Josh have said before they don’t consider it copy protection, but really it’s not worth trying to solve unless you have the manual, ergo it’s copy protection by default. Actually I seem to remember the fact that it was a kind of copy protection being an accident. I’m sure SpaceQuest.Net will clear it up.
And- if you DO have the manual, it’s simply a very easy logic puzzle. If it tells you a chip is IRK 5 and Repentium, then all other chips CANNOT be IRK 5 OR Repentium, etc etc. Just draw a 5 by 5 grid and it’s a piece of cake.

ParticipantI think it’s very interesting as well (obviously). ‘Copy protection by accident’ seems to be the most accurate term. Now that’s unique!!
Unfortunately, SQ.Net does not clear it up.
