My best friend who was an atari shareware programmer, took out his old Compute magazines. I have to say I found it intresting all the games and hardware available at the time. I loved reading it. Did anybody else had a favorite computer magazine they enjoyed reading?

(re: does anybody have any old computer magazines they loved reading) I’ve never really read a lot of magazines, period. I bought the occasional issue of PC Gamer to play the CD demos. These days, the one magazine I always buy is Cinefex, a special effects magazine of high quality… it’s almost more of a “journal” if you want to get technical about definitions.
Incidentally I’m now on the lookout for any magazines with Sierra-related advertisements or articles in them. Brad’s got the Interaction stuff well under control, so I am, from time to time, picking up some of the more miscellaneous material. I’ve actually got a whole stack of Compute magazines, and I found a few small Sierra-related things in them (and a few other interesting things too). But, I’m looking to get rid of the rest. So if you or your best friend is interested in them, let me know. Or if anyone else is interested in them. As you say, great games and hardware history stuff in some of those magazines.

Growing up in New Zealand, we got a lot of British computer mags which were brilliant – a lot of humour and jokes in them, usually very funny stuff, and at that stage the British made games were awesome, so good coverage too. My favorites were Computer and Videogames, The Games Machine and The One. I used to love sending in tips/cheats for games and seeing my name in print! I threw out all my old gaming mags about 5 years ago, I had boxes and boxes of them – something I regret now.

When I was 10 or so, I used to go to the library and get out all the old Computes! and I loved them. However, the Computes I got out were the ones (when Compute first started up) that had game listings in them that you typed in to make your own games.

Since then, in the last generation of consoles I got nearly every single issue of N64 magazine (another British mag) which is the best gaming mag I have ever read, and I still have every issue in great condition too. The humour was awesome, the artwork breathtaking, and the game exclusives were awesome too. Sadly they lost all the good writers and art editor and now NGC magazine (as its called) is terrible.

(re: does anybody have any old computer magazines they loved reading) Yeah, the stack of Compute issues I have are the ones with the old program listings in them.
If any of you people who have these boxes of old PC magazines wanna look through them at any time and find Sierra ads or articles, and donate the magazines to me… well, I’d make sure that everyone else got to see the articles too. I’d cover mailing costs of course… I might be able to pay you a bit extra too… and I’d archive everything so that, in the grand scheme of things, the material is accessible to Ken if he ever wanted to use it in his computer musem idea… or other such purposes.

I’d love to help, but over the years, old issues of omni, egm, gamepro, nintendo power, and sega visions and nextgen is all that’s survived. I’ll check next gen.

i have this book called Dvorak’s Guide to PC Games (1991). It seems like an old book, and is written by Silicon Spin’s John C. Dvorak and the didn’t know he was about to die Peter Spear. Pete always told me him and John were working on a second edition when he suddenly died in ’98. Boy I miss talking to him. He was good guy. John’s just funny. Since this book is never in print anymore, I’d be willing to send scans of the Sierra articles in the book.

Thanks for the info about that book and your offer to scan the Sierra articles – I have not heard of this book before. I will contact you via email about this.

(re: does anybody have any old computer magazines they loved reading ) I subscribed to Compute! PC Magazine back in the day. I have a box of old computer magazines some of which have Sierra ads in them. There is an article that I specifically remember of a Space Quest III review in one of them. If I get the chance I will scan them. To this day I still enjoy look through them from time to time.
