ParticipantI have a Space Quest Collection CD (with games 1 to 5), that I used to be able to run on my Windows 98 system. After a disk and motherboard failure, I have replaced the hardware with a new Pentium 4/2.4Ghz system, with Soundmax onboard audio.
SQ1-4 seem to work OK, including the audio support (for both music and voice-overs in SQ4).When I try to install and run SQ5, I cannot get the install process to recognise and use the audio hardware configuration. In addition, when I try to run SQ5 under Windows (98 SE) after the install, I get the “This is a stand alone version of SQ5 for DOS” message, and then the window closes. If I then try to do a DOS install of SQ5, I can at least get the game to run under Windows, but with no audio support other than the internal PC speaker (or should I say squeaker!).
The CD is several years old and the SQ5 directory appears to contain lots of drivers for various hardware options, rather than using the Windows-installed drivers.
Does anyone have any suggestions for getting this version of SQ5 to work with my new hardware? -

I am unaware of any Windows version of SQ5. The only SQ Windows games should only be 4 and 6. If you are having trouble installing the game, just copy the SQ5 folder on the CD to your hard drive and run INSTALL.EXE. If you still have trouble, edit your RESOURCE.CFG to your needs. It should be somthing like this:
videoDrv = VGA256N.DRV
soundDrv = GENMIDI.DRV
audioDrv = AUDBLAST.DRV
joyDrv = NO
kbdDrv = IBMKBD.DRV
mouseDrv = STDMOUSE.DRV
memoryDrv = ARM.DRV
language = 1
minHunk = 223k -

Thanks for this suggestion. I have, in fact, previously done as you suggest, but because the AUDBLAST.DRV doesn’t seem to recognise my audio hardware, I cannot get sound from the game, unless I revert to the PC’s internal speaker.
Any suggestions? -

This is a speed problem. Try the GOSiERRA patch.

Just un zip it in your installed SQ5 folder and run it. It should patch the AUDBLAST.DRV to work on modern, fast machines

I tried the GOSiERRA V3 patch, but it hasn’t solved the problem. Any other suggestions?

Do you have DOS drivers installed for your soundcard? You might also try DOSBox. http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/
