I e-mailed Ken about Colonel’s Bequest: Resurrection.

There are things I have not made public about the game, because once I put the game out there, there are going to be a lot of rip-offs.

Ken is my best chance at capitalizing on my idea. Once Ken understands the gravity of our discovery, he might agree its best not to publicize our tactics.

I can’t even hint at what is possible, because if I tell you, I have nothing. Ken, check your e-mail if you are reading this first.

If you are reading this after my e-mail, think about this: EGO interaction. Wow.

If you sent Ken an email there is no need to make a post here, especially if the only thing you have to say is that you don’t want to say anything. Ken gets many emails and so if he wishes to respond, he will do so when he has the time.

Ken, the initials are from my real name B.L. (initials).

BTW, check out my programming portfolio. It describes the complete game. I need some guidance, as this could be your pet project, if not the game you are redesigning.

Re: my programming portfolio, if we use King’s Quest as an example, that would be great.

The point of this post is to get you excited.

In addition to the ideas you are hearing from Ken and Roberta, you will also hear ideas from the rest of the team.

It is important to listen to everyone’s ideas. Don’t you agree?

– B.L. (you can call me Elby lol — oh is that backwards?)

P.S. I added this to my list of favorites under “Colonel’s Bequest: Resurrection OFFICIAL THREAD”. It’s only on my PC that it shows up like this, but http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/laurabowinvestigativereporter/ is changing.

Laura Bow Investigative Reporter is now #1 in Google and the #1 Yahoo! Adventure Games Club! Search google for: Laura Bow Investigative

The issues and topics on Laura Bow Investigative Reporter are not related to the issue I am bringing to Ken’s attention. This is something different. It goes back to the CORE of Sierra On-Line and what that company tried to do before it was purchased (and diced).

I’m as excited as I have ever been. This is a new high that does not concern drugs or alcohol. I will now cook some Kung Pao chicken — therapy to calm the nerves. This time less Cayenne and Tabasco so the flavor comes thru.

Brandon,

I know who you are, too.

I see a fire in Ken and Roberta’s eyes. I want to be part if it just as much as you do. I’ll give you a link to my portfolio later, right now it’s not necessary until after Ken has time to go over it. There’s my portfolio plus laurabowinvestigativereporter to go through. All the graphics I created – with a computer. I use any tool to get the job done, including Poser, because I have professional graphic design deadlines to meet.

Please don’t think I’m not doing work. Just think: If you don’t have to CREATE the character, you can focus 100% on the LOOK and the EMOTE characteristics!

I’ve always had to deal with limited resources, so I know how to find a way — no matter who get’s killed (as Rudy from Colonel’s Bequest might tell you).

– B.L.

P.S. My work can be viewed at this URL but you have to be a member of LauraBowInvestigativeReporter group to see the files (search MSN.com for LauraBowInvestigativeReporter) http://photos.groups.yahoo.com/group/laurabowinvestigativereporter/lst?.dir=/Colonel%27s+Bequest+-+Resurrection&.src=gr&.order=&.view=t&.done=http%3a//briefcase.yahoo.com/

There are two demos out, one with Laura walking around a swamp that I remade, it’s very simple but it shows all angles of the character.

Also a demo I made especially for my friends at AGDIforums. It was cool in my opinion but no one seemed to like it!

Oh god not this guy again. Jodo, there is no LBCBR 2004 remake, it’s not in the makes, not on Kazaa, nowhere! So why do you carry on with this? I must admit reading your posts makes me laugh, trying to look serious. Heh.

Wow. I cannot believe Jodo is still expunging his crap all over the internet. It’s okay to want to make games, and be innovative, but I think you’re crazy! You speak in future-past perspectives and you assume too much about people, and you obviously do not know who holds copyright sway in the world.

Work on something worthwhile. Put some reall effort into something else.

Once again you stalkers are bothering me on the Internet.

In any other medium, you would be ignored so the rest of us can have some fun! For instance, I offered a few positions where you could help out. You just want to bug people. You bug the people who are programming Quest for Glory 2 Remake and KQ2 VGA remake, and you are bugging me.

Right now we are looking at publishing the game only on the Net; you visit the website and you play the game online. Your saved games will be online. This way we can control who plays for free and who must pay.

“Fans” of the genre like Broomie will have to pay because they provide nothing but grief. Other people have provided screenshots and software and sound effects — they just want to see the game made.

Nothing you do to try to stop us will work. You can keep trying though, as I still find it hilarious!

Yes we are working on something, unlike your fake Laura Bow game, we’re working on a remake of King’s Quest III VGA, it’s so good we’re going into the Inventory Magazine. Can’t wait to see your interview in the Inventory, “Weekly Adventures with Assholes”

Wow, so much false info…

I wasn’t there when the alleged “bugging” took place, but from the posts that I’ve read at AGDI, the Infamous Adventurers didn’t bug you, and they didn’t bug the AGDI team for the remakes either.

Would you care to comment on this statement found in this article from your website please?

http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/laurabowinvestigativereporter/message/588

“It will be a free game, but we’ll have boxes and CD’s burned and printed, and even a manual (minus the fingerprint copy-protection system that Sierra included with their manual). We will be selling the boxes/CDs/manuals to go with the free game, or as an alternative if you do not want to download the file (the finished game should be under 1 CD (700MB). Vivendi/Universal (who owns the copyright to all Sierra property) is OK with our plans, as long as we don’t sell the actual game.” – Vanessa Mule, team member of Jodo’s game

Just how do you plan to sell your free game, and how on earth did you get VU to agree to your plans on selling it in the first place? Just curious.

“Right now we are looking at publishing the game only on the Net; you visit the website and you play the game online. Your saved games will be online. This way we can control who plays for free and who must pay.” – Jodo

Does that mean that you’ll no longer be producing CDs, printed manuals and boxes anymore? Just how exactly are you going to charge people for this game which you don’t own the rights to?

Swift,

“wow, so much false info… ” Answer from Jodo: What false information are you referring to?

“Just how do you plan to sell your free game, and how on earth did you get VU to agree to your plans on selling it in the first place? Just curious.” Answer from Jodo: Sell my free game? You sound confused. If I’m selling a game, it’s not free. If it’s free how would I be selling it? I don’t understand your question. I don’t work for VU and I don’t have a deal with them.

“Does that mean that you’ll no longer be producing CDs, printed manuals and boxes anymore? Just how exactly are you going to charge people for this game which you don’t own the rights to? -Swift” Answer from Jodo: That’s a good question. We have artwork here for the characters, animations and backgrounds for a Colonel’s Bequest remake. We have the music from Tom L’s website. The game will be released as soon as possible. Vivendi/Universal doesn’t work with independent fan remakes so there is no problem there. Let me know if you have a specific question about this.

You’re right, I am extremely confused because one of your team members (Vanessa Mule) wrote:

“It will be a free game, but… We will be selling the boxes/CDs/manuals to go with the free game”

and

“Vivendi/Universal (who owns the copyright to all Sierra property) is OK with our plans, as long as we don’t sell the actual game.”

These statements can be found in this link of yours. I’m sure you’re aware of it. After all, she made that post using your email address. (Hmm…)
http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/laurabowinvestigativereporter/message/588

As for this statement,

“Vivendi/Universal doesn’t work with independent fan remakes so there is no problem there.”

So one minute VU is, and I quote your team member, “OK with our plans, as long as we don’t sell the actual game”, and the next minute, they don’t “work with independent fan remakes so there is no problem there”? Just which one is it then?

Also, doesn’t VU own Laura Bow 1? Whatever method you’ll choose to charge people for your remake, don’t you have to get VU’s permission first before you start selling it? Making money out of a game which they still hold copyright to is illegal. Just how do you plan to overcome that problem?

And you ask me why I say there’s so much false info…

There is no false information as far as I am aware. You are concluding that you are the authority on the matter, much like Broomie does. I’ll keep that in mind. For as you must be aware, plans change. Plans change and stuff moves around; calm down, everything is under control.

Jodo replies: Yes Vivendi/Universal will not deal with us at all in regards to the Laura Bow copyright and they know full well that we are pursuing it. It’s like a legal game of chess and the final move will be when we release the game. Then it’s up to Vivendi/Universal again, it goes back and forth.

Vanessa Mule responds to general queries regarding the game using the bhjodokast yahoo address for the LBCBR Crew. She said V/U is OK with our plans because they are not actively trying to stop us – unlike some web surfers out there. V/U cannot bless our project but what do they care if we want to publish a 3-D game? It’s not like they are using the characters, the old Sierra is dead so nobody cares.

It’s just as well; it’s great fodder for the general public to make their own games. I heard rumors of a Police Quest game remake with Live Action (which is REALLY easy with a $500 Sony digicam).

I can legally charge you $50 to visit my website. Now if there happens to be a Laura Bow game there you can download for free, so be it. Nobody cares! LOL.

“You are concluding that you are the authority on the matter, much like Broomie does.” – Jodo

Now you’re putting words in my mouth. I’m not claiming that I have “authority on the matter”, I’m trying to find out exactly what is going on. And there’re still some things I’d like to clarify with you.

“Yes Vivendi/Universal will not deal with us at all in regards to the Laura Bow copyright and they know full well that we are pursuing it.” – Jodo

You mean to tell me that VU is fully aware of the fact that you plan to charge people for a game which they own (and you still don’t own that game) and they’re not going to do anything? No C&D letter? No lawsuit? I find that very hard to swallow. They’re just going to let your team reap all the profits out of the goodness of their hearts?

“It’s like a legal game of chess and the final move will be when we release the game. Then it’s up to Vivendi/Universal again, it goes back and forth.” – Jodo

?!?! That doesn’t make sense. It doesn’t even sound relevant at all.

“Vanessa Mule responds to general queries regarding the game using the bhjodokast yahoo address for the LBCBR Crew.”

Isn’t that your e-mail address? Why are you sharing it with her? Doesn’t she have her own e-mail address? If she always uses that bhjodokast yahoo address to make announcements, why did you feel the need to tell everyone that she isn’t you in the next post?

Surely you wouldn’t need to write this after her post, right?

“That was not Jodo Kast. This is Jodo.

I fixed the name so Vanessa can reply with our team name: LBCBR Crew.” – Jodo

http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/laurabowinvestigativereporter/message/589

“She said V/U is OK with our plans because they are not actively trying to stop us” – Jodo

Just because VU didn’t seem to be “actively trying to stop [you]” doesn’t mean that they’re “OK” with it.

This statement: “Vivendi/Universal (who owns the copyright to all Sierra property) is OK with our plans, as long as we don’t sell the actual game.”

implies that VU gave you some sort of official statement that they’re “OK” with it, and now you’re saying that “V/U cannot bless our project”, that you just assumed they’re ok with it because they haven’t come after you yet. I’m seeing a lot of contradictions here.

“what do they care if we want to publish a 3-D game? It’s not like they are using the characters, the old Sierra is dead so nobody cares.” – Jodo

I cannot believe that you wrote that. “What do they care”? If they let a small team make money out of their game, they lose their copyright. Of course they care. In fact, they’re even discussing the possibility of selling the old games again. (http://community.vugames.com/WebX?14@106.JY3SdK0hPTm.1578754@.1dd83b44/0) Now if they were actually thinking of doing that, would they want to lose copyright just because they didn’t stop a small team from making money off their game? I think not.

Oh, and one more thing. Did you get permission from Tom Lewandowski to use those music clips from his website?

Did Tom Lewandowski get permission from Sierra to recreate the music and post it? Find the source of the problem if that is your concern, if I am using something you do not approve of, please contact Tom directly or ask Tom to contact me directly.

Since Tom and I are on the same team together, I think I’m in a position to answer your last reply.

Yes, Tom has written permission from Sierra to distribute the music on his site. This agreement was made before Vivendi took over, but it’s binding until VU decides to revoke it.

Tom has very strict guidelines regarding the music distribution and for an enterprise such as yours, he’d need at least proof that you have written permission from VU to use their trademarks before he can give you permission to use the music on his site.

Tom has been forced to ask people to remove music taken from QS from their sites in the past, because they took it without authorisation and he didn’t give you authorisation to use it as you saw fit. (I’m positive of that)

Since YOU need something from HIM, I wouldn’t ask Tom to contact you. You should contact him and provide him with written permission from VU before you take stuff from his site that is to be used in such an endeavor.

I’m not a regular on any of the other boards mentioned in this thread. For that reason, I have zero insight to offer on the highly prevalent animosity in this thread.

I do have a few comments and suggestions though:

1. Regardless of how it started, or what the related parties have done or said in the past, I don’t see any reason why your verbal tirades needed to be carried over on to this board. If Ben believes he can make an online, multiplayer adventure game with a murder mystery setting, then by all means at least let him try. If in the end, he fails to produce a game, then so be it. He will simply have joined the rank and file of the hundreds of other small, independent, and under-/non-funded developers who have failed to bring their product(s) to the market.

2. Ben, I’d advise that you drop the whole “Laura Bow” thing. You don’t need it. If you guys are indeed successful in completing your game, and in the case that it is commercially viable, having a non-official (i.e. illegal) Laura Bow license attached to hit will go some way towards tackling any commercial aspirations. If at a later stage, you want to reattach the name, and the game is at a suitably impressive and advanced state, then surely you can approach Vivendi Universal (or whoever owns the property at that time) in order to make a deal.

3. I’ve visited the site and seen the pics. Good luck and keep on trucking!

You obviously have NO grasp on how legal issues are handled. Get a book about entertainment and copyright law. Also, you cannot use the likenessess of actors or actresses without their permission for your game. So no virtual Renee Zellweger for you.

Jodo, I’m not a fan of yours, though if I entertain you at times that is a by-product of me not understanding what the hell you’re talking about 9 times out of 10. And that’s not because I’m stupid either, I happen to have a Masters Degree in Financial Services. Not that you’d probably understand what that is.

What I will put my foot down about is your complete low, cowardly, smarmy and ill-informed insults directed at Swift. For you to be refering to her as SS Totenkopf is disgusting and degrading. While she may not believe that you are actually working on a remake / whatever of Laura Bow, a view which you haven’t disproved in your ramblings, to equate her with with Hitler’s SS … I am left stunned that even you would sink that low.

For those who don’t know what SS Totenkopf means, SS is the abbreviation of Schutz Staffel, Adolf Hitler’s elite troops during the Second World War. Totenkopf is german for skull, which is the symbol SS-ers wore on their caps…they were sometimes referred to as the Totenkopf brigade. They were particularly infamous for their ruthlessness. They were often in charge of important operations like guarding Nazi officials and leading destruction camps.

Jodo Kast or Benjamin Lindelof, you are a disgrace. I hope the mods (Relight??) consider all of this in your moderations of this board.

Ok Jodo, to associate me with Adolf Hitler’s elite troop when all I did was question you is extremely sick. Not once did I call you names, and all you did was accuse me of causing trouble when you found my questions “too difficult” to answer. Not once did I insult you, even though your lack of logic and comprehension skills are astounding. I can certainly tolerate you calling me a troll, but calling me “S.S. Totenkopf” definitely crosses it. For the record, I was and will never be a fan of yours, so you can stop deceiving yourself that I am. I’ll never be a fan of an imaginary game project, and I certainly won’t be a fan of a name-calling liar.

Klitos, thank you for speaking up for me.

Like I said, your comprehension skills are “astounding”. I was thanking him for speaking up for me. I think that your ramblings are far more distracting.

“To address your concern there IS A FAN called SS TOTENKOPF. He or she writes very similar to you and I inferred that “Swift Sumner” meant “S.S.” My mistake! If you aren’t the user I thought you were, you have nothing to worry about.” – Jodo

I did a check on all the members of the AGDI forums under the memberlist. There is no “fan” called “S.S. Totenkopf”. While there used to be one in this forum, there isn’t any in AGDI. You’re using him as an excuse for your name-calling, aren’t you? You can’t claim that you mistook me for him, because all you had to do was to click on my username to see that I never posted in any other thread at that time, let alone post as “S.S. Totenkopf”.

I’m sick of your lies. Why don’t you just admit that you called me “S.S. Totenkopf” in order to insult me, like how you called Erpy “Troller” when he did nothing wrong to you.

You can’t get away with lying forever. Sooner or later, even your fans will find out that you’ve been lying to them all this while.

I’ve read through this thread and I’m kind of lost. Heres what I gather:

1) Some guy is making a game about Lara Bow
2) He does not have the copyright or permission to use the name/characters
3) A group of people he knows from other forums have continued their arguements here
4) A giant flame war commences

Ok I think a Lara Bow fan game would be fun, however I tend to agree with everyone else that it should not be done without Vivendi’s consent. Believe it or not, but if you try to release that game it will be stomped on. There were countless before you doing the same with other sierra games and many met that same fate.

Why not make a new character in the likeness of LB? It can’t be too hard to use your own talent to do so. I mean, there wasn’t anything truley needed about the name. A common misconception is that sierra’s names are needed to create good adventure games. That is false, I mean no one had a clue who Graham was in King’s Quest 1….but it remained a hit due to the content. If you create a decent enough character I’m sure your game will make them just as famous.

As for this war, I don’t understand why it must continue on Ken’s message board. I think you should all just let it go. Why is it such a crime to post about his game? I don’t want to take any sides on this issue but he hasn’t done a thing wrong. If you don’t believe he is working on it, so be it. Most games do take years to complete you know…even fan ones. If he fails so what, it’s no hair off your backs.

Paul,

A big plus to all of this is the passion involved. These are old school adventure games we’re talking about. Remakes have already been released, so it’s not going to end anytime soon.

If I can secure financing for my own online murder mystery I could ditch the whole Colonel’s Bequest tie-in. But since I don’t have any Sponsors, I’m basing it on Colonel’s Bequest so more people want to play it.

I’ll keep you updated, but Paul is right it’s seems odd. I’m more interested in talking about online game development, than ‘Top 10 Reasons why Jodo should Stop making Games’.

Now here is a brief history of the Jodo Kast/CBequest story

About a year ago on a gaming forum, Jodo posted an intention to remake The Colonel’s Bequest. Interest was generated, and a nice dialogue was started amongst a collected bunch of amateur game makers. One posted a VGA conversion picture he had made of the Mansion Exterior in CBquest, and then Jodo immediately said “Good, now make all the rest!”

Which was met with some confusion, as the memeber clearly said he couldn’t work full time on the project, and merely posted the picture to help give an idea of what could be done. Jodo then got very strange with many of us, and took it to mean people were “on the team” if they expressed an interest, or even an opinion on the project. He then released a demo, which was one room in AGS, featuring a wacky-photoshop-filtered building exterior, and using the AGS Roger sprite, you found a key. The next demo was 7 ripped SCI screens from the Original Colonel’s Bequest – except they all scrolled. Still using the Roger sprite. He claimed a new demo would be out by Christmas, 2003. He got increasingly hostile and lost his sense of logic. Christmas came and went, no demo. His claim, which is now legendary amongst some, “It’s on Kazaa”. So, no demo, rude behavior, putdowns of other fan groups, and finally a geocities website later, Jodo kind of left circles. His geocites site had one 3-D rendered Background, that honestly wasn’t bad, and a punch of stock “Poser” characters on it. He claimed to move the setting to modern day (obviously NOT grasping the humourous names of the characters, which reflected celebrities and well known socialites of the time.) Anyway, a man named Powerhouse (who seemed to be Jodo in disguise) posted a message CLAIMING to be the reason why Sam and Max 2 was shut down, and any attempts to refute this were met with the same rude behavior.

Anyway, some of us feel he promises much to fans, and delivers nothing but hot air. Which wouldn’t be so bad, if he wasn’t rude in the process. That’s just a bit of history for you.

Steven, thank you for your objective reporting of that recap. I can verify that what Steven has reported is true.

Now I haven’t followed all of the discussion here, but I want this thread to end. Discussion like this, no matter how well-intentioned individuals may be, only leads to angry argument and flaming – that’s what happened in the other gaming forum that Steven has mentioned.

This isn’t really the place to talk about fan projects or to use these forums as a place to work on fan projects. There is a fan project area under “Sierra Chat” then goto “Fan Fiction, Art & Games”, but that should only be used to announce the release of a COMPLETED fan project or to discuss a fan project that is ALREADY COMPLETE. If you’ve already done this I’m sorry for missing it, but what you should really do Benjamin is setup your own forum, on ezboards for example you can do it for free, and you can invite people there to discuss your project.

Thank you and that’s end of story, guys. I trust you can let it be, but if you decide to continue this here, I’ll just delete all the posts.

Brandon,

I apologize for disregarding what you said above about leaving it be…but just some advice:

I saw this same thing happen on the other board a year ago, I’m warning you now, he’s not going to drop it. All of his threads were locked, and he started more. They finally had to ban him as far as I know.

Just don’t want to see him disrupt things here …

I do admit defeat. Brandon is the admin here and if he doesn’t want to have an open conversation about Laura Bow, online gaming, and copyright, that’s his call. I’ll still post on other boards… just not Game Developers Public (I don’t have access to the Game Developers-Team forum so that’s not an issue).

Exciting things in game development are cool to talk about, and probably a good thing. So let’s talk about them, and I’ll leave the LBCBR nastiness behind. What new, exciting game development happenings are you working on? Sounds like you have some interesting ideas.

Steven,

Yeah let’s talk about it! Unfortunately we can’t talk here as Brandon is listening. I’m just about to post an update now at Laura Bow Investigative Reporter Group: To visit your group on the web, go to: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/laurabowinvestigativereporter/

We just happen to like murder mysteries… Dagger of Amon Ra, other NON-Sierra murder mysteries, you know. Colonel’s Bequest just happens to be the candidate ‘most’ in need of an update. Opinions vary. My opinion rarely does.

Colonel’s Bequest is BEST run in the following environment: Running under Windows 98 with VDMSound. XP is OK if you use DOS BOX, but I’m sure you can find an old 486 that will suit your purposes for Classic Gaming for less than $100! Just make sure it has VGA graphics like VESA 2, Windows 3.11 WFW, Sound Card.

Colonel’s Bequest was strange because it created it’s graphics in VECTOR mode. Check out SCI Studio and play through the drawing of the mansion… it’s like watching the artist draw the scene out.

I’m taking a break from developing this game, but I posted an unreleased screenshot at: http://benjaminlindelof.tripod.com/index.html (scroll to the bottom of the page)

The credits will never change from the original game. My efforts will go uncredited in the final game, but I thought you guys would like to see the direction I’m taking it.

It’s fun… that’s why I’m doing it! BTW: If you want to play the original Colonel’s Bequest with a minimum of hassle, here’s a quick fix for you:

Search Google for STEEM. It’s an Atari ST emulator. Then run the ColonelsBequest.ST image of the game! The Atari ST image of the game is around the web and on file-sharing services. It’s much easier than trying to get the DOS version working under Windows XP.
