ParticipantKen,
Since my start last January for this new company, I have found a few areas that we could improve upon to boost developer productivity. After determining that there was no current effort to implement some of my ideas, I decided to send an email out to a specific group of people that I knew could be key players in rolling out my recommendations.Let’s just say the email was not welcomed with warm regard. I was told that I needed to be more “diplomatic” when working with the Networking guys. It seems that angering these guys would result in NO action.
Our company develops software…that is what brings in the money. I view Networking as a service group for the developers. It seems to me that there is a fundamental flaw here in that we allow our IS group to dictate our software development environment.
Having said all of this, I have a few questions:
1) Did Sierra have Networking back in your days (e.g. the late 80’s-early 90’s)? If so, was there ever an instance or a situation where you allowed your networking group dictate your software team’s development environments?
2) Did you welcome suggestions for productivity improvements from all of your software developers? Or was it a bubble up (hierarchical) approach…one in which a developer would voice an opinion to a team Leader and that opinion would bubble up the ranks until it landed in your hands?
