Hehe, are you getting smart on me? I’ve posted that message using IE for Mac. But, as everybody should know, the default browser for the Mac is Safari (like IE is with Windblows). Sadly, Safari doesn’t quite like the menu you’ve came up with. I’m sure it has to do with your javascripting. Safari DOES support java, but I guess not the IE dialect Microsoft developed to stagnate competitors.
I do think the new design is an improvement! But I also think websites should work no matter what operating system or browser… After all, there are countless guidelines for designing websites. Mind, I do not blame you or anything. I reckon 90% of the webmasters out there do not even think about these kind of things.

Participant(Safari Browser) Everyone will be happy to know (or, at least some everyones) that I bought an iMac, just to try this. It worked!!! And, amusingly enough, it worked better on Safari than on Windows Explorer. Strange…

interesting…
i am on a mac with IE5.1, and the new stuff seems to be working just fine. the only thing i’ve noticed that’s “off” is that the Home, System, Sierra, etc. options at the top of the screen are appearing just below the gray line, rather than centered within it (as they are on a windows machine).

I noticed that! .. strange. Someday, if I get free time I’ll fix it. Since it works fine on Safari, and (I believe) Microsoft has dropped support for their browser on the Mac, my current plan is to not put a lot of energy into hunting down why it’s doing that.

Strange? I think not. We’d have to worry if Windows IE would work better than Apple’s Safari 🙂

Hey Ken, I’ve got a suggestion / question for you.
So, I’m using Mozilla FireFox as my primary browser. I realize that this means I can’t use the fancy editor. But is there a way for the rest of us to format text? And if there is, would you be able to put a “Help with Text Markup” link or something on the posting page?
Or, on the more complicated side, why not ditch the Office dependency and implement a simple markup language for text? See the attached image from GameTZ.com for an example. It’s easy to use regardless of browser.

My cousin at Microsoft is curious why people stray from their products.
I’m reading something old to see how Mozilla (I don’t work for MS, never will 😉 can be tweaked with a home-made code to work better with IE features.
Your onto something, too. I have trouble with this site on my fiancee’s Mac, since it uses some Apple browser I never seen before. Then again, I’m not a Mac person.

Participant(re: Posting System / Compatibility) Good idea Joshua…
Statistically, I don’t think I have many non-IE visitors to the website. My sense is that it’s somewhere around 2% of the traffic. Of that 2%, only about 5% want to do fancy formatting — so, with 3,500 users, we have 70 Mac users, of which about 3.5 want to do fancy formatting.
In other words, this is something I should fix — but, it really doesn’t affect many people. My inclination is to just document a subset of HTML, rather than adding the support you are suggesting. That said, I want to think about it for a few days. What you suggested is MUCH better than HTML — it’s just that it requires code, and I’m swamped now, and it doesn’t affect many people — so, I’ll think about it and then decide what to do.
For now, if you want to boldface, surround the text with <b>sample text</b>, and for colors, try this: <font color=red>sample text</font>
Good luck!

Participant(re: re: Posting System / Compatibility) Let me know what trouble you are having on a Mac … especially if you can send me a screenshot — and, I’ll fix it. I don’t know of any existing bugs on Mac, other than you can’t use the advanced editor.

I didn’t even think about using regular HTML. Okay, I can work with that. I completely understand what you’re saying about non-IE users. There aren’t many, but I think you will all be swayed from the dark side eventually. 🙂 Personally, I don’t know how I put up with the internet before I started using Firefox. No pop-ups, very few ads, tabs instead of windows, themes…you’re missing out. 😉 Thanks for the reply Ken!

Oh, don’t worry about, Ken. The Mac my fiancee uses is so old (System 7.5, made in 1995).
On iMacs and the G series everything works great, but we’re also using IE on those.
Thanks, though!

I’m a simple user (reply to Josh), and I’ve actually never had a pop-up since ’99, thanks to some VB programming and using Notepad to manipulate codes. However, I’ve always liked Mozilla’s stuff 😀
I once shut-off phone service to 23,000 lines in Vegas when I made a wrong switch on a Unix system. Somehow, I convinced Sprint to switch to O/S 2 Warp at the main NV HQ building, then I resigned to do my own thing.
If your in Vegas and get bad phone service . . .

Participant(Firefox (was re: re: re: Posting System / Compatibility))
I’ve checked out Firefox, but I have to say I like Avant Browser ( http://www.avantbrowser.com ) better. It has what’s great about IE with none of the crap. Don’t want to waste your time with details, but it works great.
