I have a very hard time seeing red on a dark background. I really need more contrast than that. Just my opinion.

(re: About the Beta board) Yup … I’m trying to decide now if I should allow each user to tweak the color scheme, or make a system-wide change.

That would be great if we could change the colors. I am at the age now (48) where my eye muscles do not focus correctly. Heading towards glasses.

I changed the color to blue and it is working fine for my old eyes.

– I noticed there’s an outline of blue around the Reply button. I don’t recall seeing a class for the button; when you click on it changes purple so it’s the link color.

Maybe set border to 0?

– Also on this reply screen, it shows the menu, then the reply box, then a biiig space before the Edit box – above the preview/help/cancel buttons.

– Also I recommend a disclaimer or filetype restrictions so nobody uploads an EXE file, then runs it on the server using the URL to access it. TXT and DOC and Image files are OK, but Zip files have the potential to be dangerous.

Just my two cents

Did you notice the icons you can put into your messages? I added some new ones:

Smiley
Smiley
Smiley
Smiley

They’re kind of silly .. but, fun!

Email me any you’d like me to add to the list. kenw@seanet.com )

Cool, it’s great to give the user a choice of colors.

Can we have the navigation of bulliten boards go up one more level? So for example, if I’m in Sierra Chat, I want to be able to go up one more level to navigate to “Games Chat” within the BBS system, without going back to the main website. Perhaps you want to simply have “Message Boards” be the link on the main website, and not have each one listed “Games Chat,” “Sierra Chat,” etc. I hope that makes sense!

And I’ve been playing more with the admin tools and they are definitely easier than before, I’m getting used to them. Good stuff.

I think this was posted before. Here’s a quick solution:

Create the link on the template for “Main” or “Sierra Gamers” » Website Discussion » Website Suggestions etc

The page should be a new page that shows a list of pages and links to them like:
Sierra Chat
links to: http://www.sierragamers.com/bbs/bbsCategories.asp/c/55746
Games
links to: http://www.sierragamers.com/bbs/bbsCategories.asp/c/55741

Same for Museum, and other chat areas. For the Game Developer’s area, just do this:

Sierra Chat
links to: http://www.sierragamers.com/bbs/bbsCategories.asp/c/55746
Games
links to: http://www.sierragamers.com/bbs/bbsCategories.asp/c/55741
<% If SecurityLevel >= MinimumAccessLevel Then %>
Secret Bulletin Board
links to: http://www.sierragamers.com/bbs/bbsCategories.asp/c/44000
<%End If %>

This way if they don’t have the access level, nothing is displayed for them.

Also I noticed that if I encode text like:

<% If SecurityLevel >= MinimumAccessLevel Then %>
Bulletin Board
links to: http://www.sierragamers.com/bbs/bbsCategories.asp/c/44000
<%End If %>

It shows the “End Ifs” and SecurityLevel >= MinimumAccessLevel in preview but not on final post. You can allow people to post right away without preview another way. You can pass the data to new variables and replace as necessary.

Good idea. I’ll add this to my “to do” list. It should be easy.

Yup – although I’m thinking of just putting it on the same screen, as a drop-down list.

Hi Ken. I wanted to ask if you’re going to change the colors & mix this beta-“bbs” section into the website design (as seen on the first home page) ? those colors & seperate design really rejects me

I’m not sure I understand what you mean. The BBS is no longer beta. It’s now “shipping” (for better or worse). If you see anything in it you would like done differently, email me, or post a message, and I’ll add it to the list. Unfortunately, it’s just me coding, and the list is looonnnngggg – so, don’t expect rapid change. This is a hobby, not a job, and I’ve been playing too much golf lately.

I just changed the default message board color to blue. Anyone (who is registered) can change their display colors at any time. Just click on the words “Adjust Colors”.

The new message board system isn’t well integrated with the rest of the system. It will be, but I’m moving slower than I’d like. Oh well…. those that have been on this site for a while have noticed that things DO change, it just takes a while.

Thanks Ken! We forget sometimes that you are retired. 🙂

I definitely agree that the look and feel of the website could be integrated a little.

Suggestion: A little graphical border from your main website design can be added to the BBS layout; add that same border effect to the menu or the page background to tie it in more (I think it’s a blue border with 3 white lines for your main design, with a little shadow towards the edge.)

Everything works great. You are almost reaching 32000 message records which is a good milestone!
