      Hi!
I just saw a few Making of Kings Quest VII. Do you know, which Animation Tools were used for the animation in this game? I’m very interested…

      Thanks!

(re: Animation Tools for Kings Quest VII?) Where did you see “a few Making of Kings Quest VII”?
Also, what do you mean by Animation Tools? That’s very non-specific. In all liklihood, each frame of the animation was drawn as a traditional cartoon cel, and then scanned into the computer. They were probably colored in the computer, and then put into the game using Sierra’s propriety software.

I found the making ofs on my Kings Quest Collection CD. Well, i mean with animation Tools, which Tools were used, to put the Animation together (like (i know silly example) Flash). I didn’t know, that Sierra developed their own Animation Software…

      Thanks anyway…

I don’t remember if it was on the KQ7 CD itself, the KQ Collection or I saw it on the internet somewhere, but I remember seeing a video of the artists drawing the cels for the game.

(re: re: Animation Tools for Kings Quest VII?) Most of the games were done using traditional animation techniques. We would paint the backgrounds, and do pencil sketches for the characters. Animation was done using “flip book” style animation of pencil sketches which were then scanned and painted.
Final cleanup of the animation was done using an off the shelf paint program (Photoshop, Paintshop) and then, the animation went into a proprietary Sierra developed animation sequencer, for insertion into the game.

Is the intro and end sequence avi also done with this animation sequencer from sierra? Pity, that the program’s nowhere to download like the agi studio… i’m very interested in such “In-House” software…

      Thanks!

The openings/closings were done different ways in different games. My recollection of KQ6 was that the entire thing was animated using pencil sketch animation. LOTS of work.

(re: Animation Tools for Kings Quest VII?) I believe you mean KQ7 Ken, you must have just missed the key on the keyboard 🙂 Yes, the KQ7 opening / closing were pencil sketch animation, as with the whole game. At this time Sierra started contracting animation houses to do different chapters / sections of the game, and you can see them listed in the game documentation.
Also you mentioned AGI Studio. That is not Sierra’s propriety software. That is a fan-made creation to interpret AGI games. Still, I guess that’s the closest thing to “in-house” software that you’re going to get. Sierra would never release their development tools, even if they’re 20 years old (a shame).
Now, the KQ6 opening was done by Kronos, and as I mentioned before, I would do (almost) anything to see the original video render of that sequence before it was made low-resolution for the game (assuming that such an original was even made and still exists). I don’t suppose you found a copy of that in your videos Ken? 😉

I’m sorry, i have some problems to say some things right, because my english is so bad… Yeah i know all that about the different animation houses, wich animated kq7. another question: are the desgn sketches which were included in the roberta williams anthology of kq7 drawn by Marc Hudgins himself? And does this Kronos Software still exists?

(re: Animation Tools for Kings Quest VII?) Unfortunately I don’t have the Roberta Anthology so I can’t tell you that one. Those sound cool!
Kronos is not a software company, it was a visual effects company that did movies such as Lawnmower Man. As far as I know, they’re not around anymore (probably consolidated into another visual effects place what with all the mergers and such in big corporations’ holdings today).

Wow, that’s pretty neat. I have a previous King’s Quest collection, and it had a whole bunch of drawings and stuff in it but they were all pretty low resolution – these ones aren’t quite print res, but they’re definitely high for web res. Can someone with the anthology bundle all the pictures up (are there any from other games on there?) into a few ZIP files in their original format and send it to me? I can take 10 megs at a time, so let me know if you can and then I’ll send you a message through the board with my attachment email address.
