Watching the “Making Of” video on the Gabriel Knight 1 CD, I noticed something peculiar. About halfway through, when they talk with Robert Holmes about the soundtrack for the game, they play the Nightmare music, only it sounds SO MUCH better than we ever hear it. Why didn’t we ever hear that version of the soundtrack? Also, was there another track that was made for Gabriel Knight that never made it? I say this because while watching one of Sierra’s early/mid-90’s promotional videos on the CDs (I think one was on the TSN/INN disc), most of the music for it was from Gabriel Knight, but there was was a track that played that I’d never heard before. Can anyone shed light on these questions? Thanks.

      Hey there,

I have two possible explanations for this one.

Firstly, I assume you do not own a Roland Sound Canvas SC-55, which is the intended musical device of choice for this game, so for starters you won’t be hearing it the way it was intended to be heard.

Secondly, the CD version featured a digital musical version of the ‘nightmare’ theme, so it’s likely they used that one in the CD making.

      Regards,

You can find the Nightmare theme same way than in the making of video in the Gabriel Knight cd version of the game. πŸ™‚

I wish they would do a remake with all the GK music in cd quality and played by an orchestra…. GK had a really good soundtrack…

(re: Alternate Sins Soundtrack?) Robert Holmes would be flattered to hear that. As he said in the interview that Ugarte and I did, he said that he enjoyed doing all three GK games soundtracks. The big problem is getting an idea like this approved by VU.

Yes, I know that would be difficult… but I think it would be a really good cd… from all videogame music Gabriel Knight has always been nΒΊ1 for me… The Nightmare theme is very very good, I already loved it in the disquette version… but had to buy the cd version just to hear that high quality Nightmare theme… yeah I own Sins of the Fathers twice, I just adore that game… and playing the game made like stay without doing a single thing or advancing just to hear the whole track of music from beginning to end of every location… I remember listening to the track you can hear when you’re staying at the front of Malia’s mansion, I loved that music, I still do… I’d love they would do something like that… I’ve grown up with Sierra Online games, and particulary with Sins of the Fathers….

(re: Alternate Sins Soundtrack?) There are still a few sites that have Downloadable .WAVs and MP3s of the music… although not too many have been updated. You can read about what Robert Holmes considered to be his inspiration at Just Adventure or Ugarte’s website. As for myself, I really loved the GK3 theme and and GK1 theme. But, it was GK2 that caught my eye and then upon seeing the Sierra name, reminded me of the Nintendo version of KQ5… which I still own. After living in Germany for 4 years as a teenager, I had traveled to Bavaria many different times. And the FMV was what made me buy GK2 as soon as I saw it. As of now, I have 3 GK1, 2 Limited Edition 1/2, 1 Limited Edition German, 2 GK2 box sets, 2 GK3 box sets. Why so many? If one breaks, I have another. Also, I used to buy and send them out to those that couldn’t get them in their country… reimbursement of purchase price and postage only. I did the same thing with the books that Jane wrote. A small number of them were also mailed to Jane for a special autograph from her. I made a lot of friends this way. If you’re interested in some of the download site links for the music, let me know and I’ll post them here.

And so it comes full-circle. Fascinating, I’ve read your interview before, Robert.

Ironically, after my earlier post here in June 2004, I’m now on the verge of releasing a ‘soundtrack CD’ of Gabriel Knight 1’s music. Really, really close. Just waiting on my CD artist to come through.

Hopefully it does give a chance for people without good sound cards or Roland modules to hear the score how it was meant to be heard, or at the very least some good memories.

So get those 80 min CD-R’s ready, folks. πŸ˜‰
