The AGI version of King’s Quest is the very first King’s Quest. It was written for the IBM PC Jr to showcase the expanded abilities of the that machine (more colors, 3 voices to the music, etc.) It was then ported to the PC and then to other platforms. There are two versions of KQ1 in both collections. The older AGI version and the SCI remake. What you are remembering was probably played on a machine with a graphics card that was not capable of displaying all of the colors.
