In 1988 Sierra On-Line launched an all out effort to convince their customers to upgrade to full stereo sound in their computers. Having done the hard lifting already Sierra wanted their customers to enjoy a more interactive experience when playing a game. They hired professional Hollywood composers, built musical scores into their games and started a marketing effort to sell the sound cards required. The start of this effort is detailed in the latest Sierra Museum entry located here. Two decades later we all take our sound cards for granted and can pick up a spare one at Wal Mart. Then it was a different story.
