Game Title: Robert E. Lee: Civil War General
Release Date: xx-xx-1996
Release Number: 1
Next Game in Series: Civil War Generals 2: Grant-Lee-Sherman
Series: Impressions

Description:  Strategic turn-based war game focused on the North American civil war. The game is campaign-based and links eight major battles into a single campaign where you decide the fate of the confederation. Includes simulations of actual historical battles such as Antietam, Gettysburg, etc. as well as a fictional assault on Washington D.C.  Uses traditional top-down 2d graphics for the tactical maps, and the game includes a series of fmv clips re-enacting battles, charges, etc. that play upon specific actions.  (From Mobygames description)

Roberta Williams, who designed Sierra's first game, Mystery House in 1980, felt it was time to write another murder mystery which lived up to the computer capabilities of the late eighties. Mystery House, which was put on public domain in 1988, was the first computer game ever with graphics, but it lacked colors, animation and sound. The Colonel's Bequest was developed, using EGA graphics, Sierra's SCI engine, sound and a music score, as well as featuring a deeper plot and more detailed character descriptions.

The game has a sequel, The Dagger of Amon Ra, which is also the last Laura Bow game. Both games are also included in the 1997 King's Quest Collection and the Roberta Williams Anthology. Although the original release of The Colonel's Bequest can still relatively easily be found on online auctions, a complete original game is considered as a true collector's item, as it contains many goodies which are often missing from second-hand sales, particularly the Laura Bow pen and notebook. The games copyright protection is also quite original: the gamer needs to use a magnifying glass (included in the box) to identify a fingerprint on the game screen.

Wing dll. Go to c:/windows/syswow64 and make sure  the wing dll is there. If not go to CWG1 where it is installed and copy the Wing file and move it there.

You can find Civil War Generals 1 and 2 at old It is compatible with  7,8, and 10. There is a fee of $5 something for downloading any amount of games you may want in a 24 hr. period. I have Generals 1 and 2 on my computer and running in windows 10. At first it was frustrating because it would not run in full screen. I got through this by going to display and making a custom setting of 640x480 at 60 refresh. Since then I have not had any problems. It has been years since I have played it and it is just as fun as it use to be. Hope this will help some of you that still wish to play the game.

I want to play robert e. lee civil war general can someone help me figure out this 64 bit compatible verizon that i need and where to get it???? please

Robert E. Lee - Civil War Generals

This game runs fine 98 percent complete compatibility on a windows 7 64bit pc.

You need to install a copy of wing32.dll to you Windows/SysWoW64 directory.

Preferably get off another pc that has xp running 32bit in the system32 directory or take your chances and download a copy.

Run in compatibility mode win95 check box for 256 colors and 640 x 480 resolution.

Start game and you will notice a graphic anomaly. To fix this turn off the overview map and video is fixed.

You will also note that your mouse will scroll properly along the map edges.

The only other problem is the Help Menu wont work properly. That's  because the file was written in 16bit format and your running 64 bit windows I assume.

You can't run 16 bit properly in a 64 bit system.

This fix was from running a Nvidia GTX 750 ti card, It may not work for everyone, but I think it will work for most pc's.

Good Luck Have Fun

I have an issue with installing the program. It is giving me this error saying "the program cant start because WING32.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this program". But what is odd about this is that I have WING32.dll on my computer. I don't know why it is showing up a error. Can someone help me with this issue.

I used to love this game back in college in the 1990s-it's simple complexity, for lack of a better term really sucks you in. It is simple to learn how to play, but takes into account many of the complexities of battle including morale, terrain, supplies, leadership, firepower, numbers, etc. I searched around and was able to order the game again with a CD that is made for more modern systems, Windows 7, 8, and XP I think.

I have been playing the game over the last few days and it is just as fun as I remember!

You can also try the download from the following link-I haven't tried it, but I think its free if you don't want to spend the $60-$100 on the CD.

For those that are having trouble running the game.  Have you tried this:

find the .exe file for the game on your hard drive - it will in the main folder of the game when you installed it on the computer.  Right click on the file and go to Properties.  That will open a new window.  Go to the Compatability tab.  In that tab, click the box for 'Run this program incompatibility mode for:". Right underneath that is a drop down selection box.  Click on the little arrow on the right side and it will bring up a list of different versions of Windows.  Choose the right one (Windows 95???).  Click on APPLY in the booth right of window.  Click OK.  Try running the game.  I hope that works.  I'm trying to find my copy of the game, myself with no luck so far, but I wanted to try and help those that can actually play the game.  I really do love it, too.

Robert Mercer, I know the feeling. I have not played the game since I have upgraded my comp few times. I have tried to play it on later comp versions, but the game does not work. I would love for it to work on the updated comp systems also. The game looked so fun to play and I am a Civil War buff as well as a World War I and World War II buff. Heck, I am a military games buff!! I even tried to get Axis & Allies to work, but it won't either for the same reason. I really want to play a game that is about the American Civil War.
